Scanning yields War Assets, Fuel, intel and artifacts for Side Missions. Choose a system from the Galaxy Map and you can scan while you navigate the star system by hitting the LEFT TRIGGER. The scan beacon may pick up an anomaly on a planet or in deep space which you can explore by entering its orbit. You will then either immediately be awarded with a resource or you will enter the scanning mini-game.

The ultra-streamlined scanning of Mass Effect 3 only requires you to navigate to a point of interest using the compass-like cursor. Once you get here you can launch a probe. You have an infinite amount of probes, and you don’t need to purchase them.

The resources in a given solar system are accounted for by a percentage shown in the upper left corner of the screen. Once you find a resource, this percentage is increased. Once you have 100% of all resources in a galaxy, scanning is no longer necessary.

REAPERS

If there is no Reaper on the system you want to explore, you are safe to travel and scan it as you please. However, if you begin scanning in a Reaper-infested system, the Reapers will move in and attempt to capture the Normandy. If you are caught, you will be returned to your last save outside of the Galaxy Map.

The Reaper Alertness meter in the lower left region of the screen will reveal how many more scans you can perform before alerting the Reapers. To escape the Reapers, you must simply pilot the ship out of the current system. You can do this by using a Mass Relay or by just cruising out of the solar system -- at the expense of fuel.
That actually sounds alright, and makes sense in the context of the game. Well done, Bioware.

I also like how you're told how much resource is left in the system- no more wasting time on barren locations!

yeah and from the looks of it, all you have to do is just leave the system either flying out of the border or using the relay, and they wont follow you. wonder if you can leave and come right back to the system or if you have to wait a while.
You can go right back. don't let them fool you they look faster than the Normandy but in a straight run you are faster than reapers. so if you get the reapers after you leave the system then just go right back into it. You will enter whichever direction you are facing when you press A. you can continue to gather resources even with the reaper's after you so there no need to actually beat a mission to do anything. and don't be afraid to get caught it literally puts you right back into the system before you triggered them so theres basically no repurcussions. I had every explorable system thoroughly checked to 100% as soon as I had control of the Normandy.

Hopefully someone can help me here. I was scanning an area with 2 systems in it and I had 50% found in both areas. However the red triangles on the end are showing three more points pointing in all directions. Are there more systems that I just cant see right now as in are they going to pop up later on in the game? I don't get much time to explore in the game because work gets in the way. Any help is appreciated.
Those are the directions in which the reapers will enter that system.

Looks like the scanner is pretty liberal in terms of how many times you can use it before the Reapers start hunting you, which is good. I'm sure you'll be able to upgrade that aspect of it, too.

The Reaper chasing looks like something out of a 1980s NES game.

wow much improved over ME2. i wished for the anomaly compass indicator thing for all resources in ME2, glad to see they switched to that. the running from Reapers thing makes it seem like youre trying to break into a bank or something at night and running from cops that show up lol.
