My specs: HP Pavilion dv6 AMD A8-3500M, 2.4GHz, 6GB RAM, 640GB HDD, AMD Radeon HD 6620G w/ dual graphics Radeon HD 6750M

Just got this bad boy 2 months ago, refurbished. Anyways, lately, whenever certain programs are open, the screen flickers. Its usually one or two lines that keep flickering, whenever I open Chrome or utorrent, but it doesn't happen when I run high resource programs like a media player or a game. Its really weird, and it usually occurs right after my laptop screen comes back from sleep mode. After about 5 minutes, the flickering goes away. It also doesn't occur when I have the windows minimized and just have the desktop displaying. Does anyone have a clue as to what is causing this problem? I messed around with the AMD Vision controls, but nothing seems to have an effect on it.

Thanks for any replies.

I'm also having a problem with my screen. For some reason when i open the laptop up my entire screen turns white and flickers. I have to move the screen around to stop it. Sometimes i can just push the cover down where the power cord plugs in and it stops. I'm thinking it's a short or loose connection. I need to fix this cause i use it for work and really need it running. Thanks!

If you find that these flickers are appearing when the clocks are switching you can use RBE to look into the BIOS of your cards and look at the Power Profiles, which decide what the clocks of your cards are for specific applications. You can then change all of the memory clocks to be the same at all times, since downclocking memory doesn't save a whole lot of battery power anyway.

GPU-z is a program you can download. Small, free, and lots of information in it. You can check the sensors tab in it at see your Core/Mem clocks on a graph and see if they change over time.

quote Iceguy2003
Can you describe the flickers a little more? I realize it isn't flickering during a game, but it flickers ONLY when you open utorrent, for example? Or during the whole time it is open?

And what do these flickers look like exactly?
They are horizontal black lines, a pixel or 2 high, and the flicker when I have the program windows open, not when they are minimized.

And MasterCheat , how would I go about doing what you suggested? Don't know what RBE and GPU-Z are, or what I'm supposed to do in the BIOS. I do have Crossfire though, so that is definitely a possibility.

Yeah, what Iceguy said. What do the flickers look like? Try troubleshooting it some more. It sounds a lot like an issue with the cards coming awake after a low power state, try disabling ULPS. Also, what drivers are you using?

Another option that just occured to me is a small issue that causes flickering when RAM clocks switch from low to high especially on Crossfire and dual-gpu cards. To determine this you would need RBE and GPU-Z to determine the clocks and is quite fixable by editing the BIOS for the cards.
