I've gotten to the part where the old man in the cell blocks (chapter 15 - the encore) is supposed to open the shower door to proceed to the next level (I have seen this in walkthrough vids), but he won't do it. He either stays at the control panel or walks around aimlessly. Seems like a bug specific to me as I have not seen anyone else complaining about it. Any ideas?

Provided you're connected to the Internet, they should happen automatically when you enter the game.
Beyond that, maybe you should consider deleting the save data for Resistance 3 on your PS3. That could fix it. Or perhaps the disk is damaged? You could consider returning it.

Have you tried doing the level again from the start? Might be worth trying different checkpoints.
This. Just load the last possible checkpoint via chapter select. A simillar thing happened to Markimus_123 at the sledgehammer level and i think thats what he did to fix it.
I just tried loading the latest level (grateford-cellblock A)as you suggested and it got stuck when I got to the door opening part again. also, when i QUIT the game using menu, the PS2 always freezes and I have to hold the powere button to turn it off and turn back on.

I've alrdy tried that a few time - thx. even powered off the ps3 before restarting. tried that level around 4 times, but he still won't open the door.

Save and quit? Turn off the PS3 perhaps? It might fix itself if you do either of those things, presuming you haven't already done that.
