So yes, I realise that 1.8 is a long way away. And 1.7 hasn't even come out. But as our esteemed leader says, we may as well make a 1.8 thread.

This is probably going to be one of, if not the biggest update yet. It is supposed to flesh out Minecraft a bit more, and adding more stuff for those people who love to adventure.

Notch recently posted some upcoming features in his blog. Here's the direct quote:

Apparently, what's in the quote below is everything they have revealed as of 5/7/11. Yes that is in the English date format, cos it makes more sense.

The more I watch about 1.8, the more I'm loving the new bow mechanics. I say he adds a few more weapons yet, but, in the original blog post, he did say 1.8/1.9 would contain 40+ changes and additions total, and I don't think we've even seen half of them. We'll be pretty entertained until the final version is released.

Ali_45 ya i guess so hopefully its not to much longer untill 1.8 and i think he said enderman wasn't ready for release either so we wont be seeing him for a while

Then technically it's not halves? It's just being turned into two updates not one, halves (at least my understanding) would be doing 1.8 then a a week later doing 1.8.5 because they just wanted to release it quickly.
