Well, I was just thinking about how far computers have came in gaming power since ten years ago. What better place to talk about computers than Neoseeker, right? So, who wants to share what PC's they had in 2001? The GeForce3 was top of the line with the Ti cards. The MX series was out. This is what we all had to "work with". Played Half Life great, but that was nearly 3 years old at the time. As far as the longevity of a video card at that time... things were moving so fast, after a year or two, it would just be crawling in games. But, that's how it goes.

Processors were, well in Intel's case, starting to hit some HIGH frequencies. While I was gaming on a Celeron 500mhz, which was fast two years earlier, I was now going up against Pentium 4 2.0ghz+ processors.

As for RAM, 96MB of RAM would get you by with most things. To game, though, you still wanted more than that, and 256MB was plenty for me at that time.

This was around the time I became more aware of computer hardware's relation to gaming. Actually, that "hit me" in 1999. Anyways, it was all the beginning of this disease of remembering all CPU's and GPU's and how they perform. We all have it. You know what I mean. Well, that's when I finally learned that I had been getting PC's with no video card. Sometime in 2002, or so, I got a P4 2.4ghz/256MB RDRAM 533mhz/MX420. Ended up at 768MB RDRAM and a 9800PRO, lol. I remember it was a fast machine back then. Then Athlon 64's came out and, wow, talk about gaming performance. I had that P4 2.4ghz, then I built a new rig with an Athlon 64 2.4ghz and used the 9800PRO from the P4 system, and man, it was a night and day difference.

Ok, ramblin' will stop for now. I was just thinking how far things have came, and yet it all literally feels like yesterday on the timeline.

Just found this on semi-accurate. Fairly relevant, even though the original voodoo was a bit longer than 10 years ago

Didn't have the original Voodoo myself but in '99 I was playing doom and Tribes on the Voodoo Banshee. Looked like hell then but it played well enough.

In 2001 -- I was using the first PC I built from scratch.. (I built it in 1996) -- Which was a Pentium II - 400Mhz, with a Quantum Fireball 10GB HD (7200),.. 256MB RAM, Nvidia TNT II (IIRC), etc.

I upgraded it between then an 2001 -- to make it a PIII - 800Mhz, with an MX 440 Nvidia Card with 512MB of RAM.

I built another one in 2003 that was long overdue -- This was my first Overclocking experience.. which is still in use today -- It is an AMD Athlon XP 2100+ , Had a ThermalTake II Fan that ran 72CFM .. was loud as HELL! 1GB of ram (I believe upgraded to 1.5) -- I forget how large the HD was initially..

Was a great computer, during the EQ1, EQ2 days..

My first computer was a 286-16Mhz, with 1MB of RAM (yes 1 Megabyte).. with a 40MB (Megabyte) Hard drive,.. 3.5inch floppy (was new tech).. EGA/VGA monitor, etc. This was a very good machine for the time. I was 8

Ran a BBS (Bulletin Board System) off it.. if anyone recalls those.

I had (or rather my brother had, before he gave it to me) was a Time PC which was from 1999/2000. Can't remember the specs but at the time I suppose it would've been considered good. Mind you, they ruined it by shipping with Windows ME.

I think it had a 16GB HDD, 400Mhz processor and 128RAM at the time. Other than it sporadically turning off, it was still working before it got retired in 2004.

The one after that was a Medion from around 2002. Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz processor, 512MB RAM or something like that. Used AGP, since PCIe is still fairly recent... my computer itself was one of the first to come with a PCIe v1.0 x16 graphics card, which since then have become vastly outdated and outperformed.

NVIDIA TNT2 32MB GPU
Got that off of a friend when I had the NEC because I wanted to do video out to the TV haha. Not the most amazing thing out there given I was running Voodoo at the time but I did manage to get output once

Also forgot to mention the tower had a WinTV tuner for my Dreamcast recordings that were way too large to upload over 56K haha.

800Mhz, 256MB RAM HP desktop w/17" CRT monitor maxing at 1027x768 resolution on the graphics card and a 60GB HD. I was the shit back then.

Back in 2001, I believe I was using some crappy Compaq computer before HP bought them. I can't even remember lol

First computer I ever used I still own under my desk ah playing The Sims Complete Collection on a 40GB HDD, 512MB RAM and some shitty GPU that's been around since 98

Of course, this was back in like 2003 I think? When XP was shiny and new and like £200 xD

The first computer I ever used was my dad's Dell dimension XPS T700r.

Pentium III
NVIDIA TNT2 32MB GPU
Creative PCI Audio Card
20GB HDD
128MB RAM

I vaguely remember it running Windows 98 and still have all the install disks for it but by the time I really started using it, it was upgraded to XP. Also came with an 18" CRT monitor which I still actually have and use occasionally. Still also have the Altec Lansing Speakers and subwoofer that came with it. The speakers are pretty good quality still and I used to use them in my car through a power converter before I was able to just plug my iPod into the car directly.

Still have a bunch of ZIP 100MB disks lying around as well that for some reason my dad used.

Finally threw out most of the computer last year. Still have the RAM, audio card, hard drive, and GPU lying around in my closet I believe. Never know when I might need them for something. Most of the parts won't be compatible with current PC's though.

I still use the computer I built in 2003. I've been saying for years I'm gonna build a new one and I never get around to it. I will say though I am impressed that a computer that has been turned on almost 24/7 for 8 years is still working without fault. It's slow as hell, but it works without fault.. Specs if you are curious;

Intel Pentium 4 3.2Ghz
ATI Radeon 9600XT 256Mb
1Gb DDR
On-board Sound

It's shit and I am now pretty serious about building a new one, but right now money is tight so I'm merely going to build for expansion sake. While I'm still using AGP x4 it doesn't give me many GPU options these days so I'm finally ditching the thing after 8 years of solid service.

2001? Was almost to a new era at that point.

NEC Powermate tower
Intel Pentium MMX 166 overclocked to 233
96MB EDO RAM
Voodoo 3 2000 PCI
Soundblaster AWE32
27.3GB HDD from WD Think it was an Ultra ATA model
ATI Rage video (2MB)

Also had an AST desktop
Intel Pentium MMX 166
128MB SDRAM PC66
Soundblaster AWE32
Diamond Voodoo 4MB
ATI Rage (4MB)

In 2002 or so I built my first rig from scratch

Antec SX1040 case
AMD Athlon XP 1800+ (Palomino core)
Soyo Dragon Plus (KT266a)
512MB DDR PC2100 RAM
ATI Radeon 8500LE
Onboard sound
(replaced by Hercules Digifire 7.1)

Was a decent build actually (still running today)

At the time I was playing Deus Ex, GTA/GTAII, Hitman, Kingpin, Quake III, CS, HL and a few others. I was obsessed with Opposing force for a while there.
