Other than change your ability to "Mummy"?

And conversely, some special moves make contact, such as Petal Dance.
A full list of the exceptions can be found here.

Mummy changes your ability to Mummy with a physical attack and the ones who get changed to mummy can do the same.
It has to be a contact-making move, earthquake, for example, is a physical move, but won't cause mummy to spread since it makes no contact.

No it's not.
As Dragoon said, Simple doubles all stat changes (both positive and negative).
It's far from useless, it's just rather unreliable.

Mummy takes care of the house and kids while Daddy goes out and works.

Simple removes your ability. Essentially, Simple is like not having one.

It should have been Zombie, not Mummy, though.

But Cofagrigus isn't a Zombie, it's a Mummy inside it's coffin. Or maybe it's just the coffin..

Could be abused if you have an Archeops that attacks an allied one in a double battle, hehe.

Exactly. The whole point of Mummy is that is basically disables the foe's ability if they make physical contact with you.

Instead of thinking it similar to Simple, think of it more as someone using Gastro Acid (negates abilities) on you, but now it's infectious when you're hit with a physical move.
