Yes. I never actually killed it i always just ran past it. I cant exactly remember the reason why though.

Actually he can get stunned for a bit and drop to one knee, freeze rounds work well for this.

I remember that! It's funny because the actual demo it had the characters in 3d and everything else was blocky 2d.

Yeah, you roamed around like normal then if you approached an enemy you'd enter "battle mode".

They were also going to release a port of the first RE for the GBC but it got cancelled. Here are some screens:
