NVIDIA is looking to steal some of the high-end graphics card market spotlight with the launch of the GeForce GTX 580, its fastest single-GPU solution yet. We were lucky enough to put this new card through its paces to see just how fast is fast enough this round!

i know, i just wanted to clarify since i dont know many people who do know that 1.4 isnt needed. no offense meant.
No offense taken, I am sorry if I sounded rude in my post.

error- in the overclocking part you said gtx 280. im assuming you meant 580?

oh, and a side note- hdmi 1.4 is not required for 3d. high speed 1.3 has the necessary bandwidth for 3d and performs just as well for 3d as 1.4. its kind of a scam how they trick people into thinking 1.4 is needed for 3d.
Thanks for pointing out the 280 error.

Also about the 3D. I didn't say that older versions couldn't support 3D. Just that this card uses the 1.4a connection and that it does support 3D.

I lied. Benchmark reviews did it.

I am curious as to why the 6870/6850 crossfire. Doesn't that reduce the performance of the 6870 to the 6850 level? I only ask because I have not yet found a review anywhere that is doing a solid 6870 crossfire versus this card, even tho that combination is slightly cheaper, and seems likely to produce results that are at least equal if not slightly superior in many situations.

Awesome review. Smart move by AMD lowering the price of the 5940 to match that of the 580, given that the two GPU's are still faster than even the new 580.

Unequalled perfomance indeed but the 6870 still seems like the sanest choice. I'm looking forward for the GTX-560 release.
Agreed. If you don't mind blowing the dough, this seems great, but I'm definitely more inclined to take a performance hit for half the price if the minimum performance is still solid.
