So my computer gave me the good old BSOD while I was in the middle of mining the other day. When I restarted and loaded Minecraft, much to my dismay - my World1 said "Create New World" instead of loading my World 1.

From what I read, basically I can just load a "new' file in the same slot and it will spawn me in my world, just at a different point.

I went into C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\.minecraft\saves and backed up my world data, just in case. Ideally I would only have to repair the level.dat file in there, but because I crashed and got a BSOD while playing, the level.dat file was not merely corrupted, but missing entirely.

So after loading into my world, but at a different point, I made my way back to my original spawn. Utilizing a hex editor called NBTedit, I was able to reset my spawn point, as well as restore my inventory. Granted the latter was a painstakingly annoying process... changing dec values from dirt to pickaxes 16 or so times was rather cumbersome, but worth it.

Never fear, my world was safe. I am keeping a backup now not only on one of my external HDDs, but in my dropbox as well, juuuust in case.

Just thought I would post this in case anyone else ran into this issue.

TL;DR: If you're having trouble finding your house after remaking your world, I recommend using a mapping program/website (there are plenty out there) that will render an overhead view of your entire world.

This happened to me recently and thank so very many deities for letting me find this thread (I would have given up hope of ever getting my progress back). I was getting really frustrated remaking my world because I wasn't exactly sure of the seed that I used to make it. I did finally manage to get everything back, but unlike a few of the other people that have posted here, I didn't spawn right next to my house or even anywhere near my original spawn point. If this happens to you, the best way that I have managed to come up with to find your house is to use a mapping program that will render the entire world for you. There are plenty of them out there, but the one I used is Minecraft Overviewer.

I think the reason I wasn't spawned near my original spawn point is that I started the map on a different version of Minecraft (I believe 1.2.3) and the computer crash happened at version 1.2.5. I'm not certain about this, however, so don't take my word on it. If my hypothesis is correct, however, it would explain why there was a very unusual biome shift directly adjacent to my new spawn point. I started on a desert, but just a few steps away, the desert abruptly stopped and there was a huge body of water that stretched out in either direction. I'm assuming that the newer Minecraft version has a slightly different biome generation code so the previously rendered chunks didn't line up with the newly generated ones.

Long story short, this could be a clue that you are spawned in the correct world, just far away from your house.

Legolas777 I thought you'd cry with me for my massive loss of Animes.
Oh, I didn't see that part D:
Let's cuddle and cry over the loss of your anime.
I'm over it now... YouTube is now my main source of watching though.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why you make backups.
I really should make some. Problem is i've got about 1.5tb of things on my hard drives.

To continue the year old bump... BSOD is better then what my netbook did. Its Windows partition BSOD'd while updating and took out all the partitions in the Hard drive. So I lost my new updates on my texture pack a map with a 15,000+ block pixel art I made by hand and all my other information including 20GB of various animes. Moral is... Windows, when it dies, will die with one hell of a bang and take out every OS on your PC with it.

According to to other posts, creating a new world where your old one used to be (same name and settings) might bring it back.

Before you do that however, I would go to C:/Users/YOURUSERNAME/appdata/.minecraft/saves and back up your world to another place (if it's there). If it's not there, it's gone, unless you had other backups.

Also, this thread is a year old.
