Well, i recommend you to have the essentials 3 , wich is, fire, grass and water, when you have those 3, now you need one that can learn fly, the other 2 is up to your preference, well thas pretty much about it i think

(Hehe, I'll try to make an account here later. This is a pretty popular website... I'm surprised I haven't made an account yet, I go on here a lot for help on games and stuff...)
For a starter, pick Cyndaquil! It learns some badass moves, and if you want to breeze through the game, you want to have a fire type. It's strong against the bug, ice and steel gyms. Plus, Tysplosion is a great Pokémon and has some pretty good stats. And if you want the ever so badass Totodile as your starter, catch either Vulpix or Growlithe, depending on the game. Though I prefer Arcanine, Ninetales is also a pretty good Pokémon to have on your team. Ah, yes, strong fire types.
Hmm, I would suggest having at least a water type and a flying type in your team. Flying for using the move fly, as well as knocking down those grass and bug types, and a water for the ground, rock and fire types. Those are pretty useful. I would also advise in getting maybe a Quagsire? Although it's gross looking, it's a water-ground Pokémon, because even though they're weak against grass (that's where the flying type comes in handy), the water can knock down the fire, rock and ground types. Also, they're immune against electricity! Woo hoo!
I would also recommend resetting your game so you can get a female Eevee when the time comes, so you can breed for more, because having an Eeveelution or two in your team is pretty good! Umbreon has pretty good defense and it can learn Toxic, which is a pretty great move if you're battling a tough opponent. If you want an attack-based/special-attack-based Eeveelution, pick the adorable psychic type, Espeon! Although you have to raise Eevee's friendship, it's worth it in the long run!
For the rest, pick what you want! Have fun with the game, and don't be hard on yourself if you catch something that isn't that great, because you can make it great/useful by training! Have fun!!! :D!

Honestly, I think the best team would be Mewtwo, Charizard, Feraligater, Snorlax, Dragonite, and last but not least with alittle controversy from a lot of people but sizor.
