The following quote comes from Mike Bashiok of Blizzard, courtesy of diablofans.com:

quote Bashiok
We've been working with a level cap that's quite a bit different. It was something I had alluded to a while back but I think it's probably worth discussing sooner rather than later.

So, we're working with a lower level cap for a myriad of reasons but really the main point that they're more or less all linked to is that we came to the conclusion that a cap of 99 exists for the sake of itself. Meaning that it's a really high number despite all sorts of good things like meaningful player/skill/power pacing, item distribution, balance, etc. It's sort of this long term goal that really didn't matter, almost an Achievement without the flashy graphics or *bwong* sound. You didn't need to reach 99 to do anything, in almost all ways the game stopped somewhere in the 80's (for a lot of people a lot lower), but by stretching the player out over an additional 20 or so levels to 99 it created all sorts of issues we were having problems justifying forcing the game in to. So we're working with a level cap of 60 at the moment.

This is the point where some of you scream "60!? That's like original World of Warcraft!" And then the rest of you /facepalm and say "60!? Couldn't you pick any other number? Now everyone is going to compare it to World of Warcraft!"

The 60 level cap we're working with came from a lot of time and thinking about our content and how we want the experience to feel at every level. It so happens that it works for us really well.

Of course it all comes down to an XP curve. We could, for instance, say the level cap in Diablo III is 60 and then pace that curve and gain out over what we estimate it took someone to reach 99 in Diablo II. Of course we wouldn't do that but it should help illustrate that the time from 1-60 in Diablo II does not equal the amount of time it will take to reach 60 in Diablo III. 60 levels versus 99 levels doesn't mean less content or less powerful characters, etc. These aren't uniform levels of power that move from game to game. And in fact we are pushing a longer game that Diablo II and I'd argue our characters feel way more powerful. Ok, that out of the way, moving on!

The leveling experience is always going to stop somewhere because the real game is the item hunt. So, instead of letting it drag out to a less meaningful 80 or so levels like most people saw in Diablo II, we have 60 levels of awesome; at every level you'll get a meaningful and noticeable increase in power. It has a ton of other benefits and fixes a lot of problems a higher cap causes, but I'll take pause.
Interesting bit of new development which I figured might further facilitate some discussion. In its own right I can't imagine it makes much of a difference, but I understand that for some it may lay various suggestions.

Thoughts and sentiments?

It's pretty obvious why the level cap is 60.... They are going to sell expansion packs for more money. Diablo III is definitely gonna be one of the top mmorpgs when it is released and they wanna make money from the expansion packs.. just like WoW...
Bingo. As if it weren't clear enough that this is the case, WoW started out with a level 60 cap. "Raising the level cap" is one of main allure of buying an expansion, and I expect there to be many. Not that I'm complaining...

I think it's a good idea, as long as the experience required to reach level 60 is on par with reaching 90 in D2. Since D3 lets you reassign skill points later on, you no longer need to rely on leveling up to max out your primary skills.

it really is pathetic how diablo is turning into WOW. I have played both d1 and d2...its a grind fest...thats what makes the game fun. Its not about balanacing the PVE...the enemies shouldn't stand a chance. It is about gaining levels, doing max damage [13k hammerdin anyone lol] and getting the best loot. Blizzard has strayed to far from this and making the game ridiculous. Leave the level cap for WOW, just give us the the lvl 99 cap for d3.
I saw some footage of a player attacking a group of monsters....they were still standing 20 seconds later....that should not be. Unless the character is super weak...that isnt diablo, plain and simple.

It needs to be stressed that the exponential increase of experience-to-level ratio isn't going to stay the same as it was in Diablo 2. It's not going to be as easy to achieve level 60 as it were in the previous game, so I'm guessing that there's still going to be quite a fair bit of distance between 50 and 60, whereas you could close that distance within an hour or two on Diablo.

The seem to be setting things up to where it's still going to take some heavily invested time, but not nearly to such an outrageous extent. Through the late 80s to early 90s in D2, you really started to notice the increase in time it took to level, and I'd imagine that that's going to be the same sensation regarding the level cap here. From what I can tell, though, they're really trying to gear the metagame and item hunt to supplement the grind (in a little more engrossing way than the monotonous Baal runs).

It kind of plays off of some of the new concepts including the gem system, but I think that's an extensive discussion suited for it's own thread.

Lvl 60 seems nice, because I really didn't like to grind up to the 90's, and here you can easily find a group of level capped players and play with them.

Yeah man keep the info flowing, it seems quite a few of us regularly check this place. I love seeing new D3 news.

And level 60 cap makes sense. I think the highest I've ever gotten in D2 was 93/94? And that was pure torture.

Also, OMGWTF D3 news???
There's actually been a decent amount that I've accumulated in the past few months, I've just been rather lethargic to bring it to discussion on Neoseeker, let alone sign in. I'll try to get some more tossed up here by week's end.

The information stream - now that Starcraft II has shipped - is coming steadily. Blizzcon is just around the corner in October, as well, and it's been confirmed to primarily circulate around Diablo 3.

Hopefully this allows for a few good characters rather than one good main and a few alts.

Yeah, who would of thought that a thing like that would happen?
