A European online retailer has started selling Intel Corp.'s first six-core processor for desktops before the chip's official release by the hardware maker.

German retailer Alternate is selling the Intel Core i7-980 Extreme Edition processor, code-named "Gulftown," for ¬1.099 ($1,483). The chip is targeted at desktops used by enthusiasts like gamers.

Anyone have a dunnington that we could put this beast up against? I'd like to see the first 6 core processor fares against this chip. I know it's going to get mutilated but it would be cool to see regardless.

Graphic workstation programs would be in love with the 24 threads as would any video program D; god I'm thinking of how much time you would cut off especially if you threw in a 5870 or something for gpu rendering.

Yeah its overkill for pretty much anything else outside of Server / Workstation but still, for those who can use the power its pretty gross. Just need the price to come down by the fall or for more mainstream level models to hit.

I need me one of these. Think that company ships to the good ole USA?
i would assume so, since intel is based in america
I was referring to the OP's post. About a company in Germany selling the chips.

*I know Intel is based in America.

no, just the 980x is on the 32nm, not the 975.
yeah, I knew that. that's why i sarcastically 'ed.

same manufacturing process it is, still same power usage.

i hope neo can do a review on this beast.

however i doubt it will be used in gaming within the next couple years.

i wonder how big the performance gains will be over the previous i7's
