gambits allow from much more depth in strategy.
Exactly, with all the different ways you can use gambits, why wouldn't you? I can't even imagine taking on Yiazmat without them. That would've been too much to deal with.
Another option is to just use the gambits for healing. That way you can concentrate on your attack strategy. There are so many ways to use gambits, which is what I liked about it.
Yeah me too, gambits are awesome, on a side note, on older FF games, i almost always would have 2 people setup with Auto-Berserk/Haste status and have 1 or 2 others casting damage/healing/support spells.
Basically the same thing as gambits, only gambits allow from much more depth in strategy.

If SE pulls out the AI system from FF13, it would've become the old school RPG gameplay instead.

I don't think we actually require gambits. We can still fight using normal RPG style. I think SQUARE was testing it out. FF13 had the same kind of set-up (in term of fighting) but we still managed to control everyone in the battle effectively.
So, in my opinion - No. We did not need Gambit.

I agree that that are not necessary, but very useful. Especially for the bosses where things can get a bit hairy at times. I always have them set up and just turn them off when I don't need them.

Gambits ease your gameplay thoroughly. You can focus on the battle pace and act on your account if things go wrong (eg; encounter powerful rare foes).
If not, the battle will really stress your mind out.

You don't have to tell your charactors to attack over and over with gambits off; they will automatically keep attacking the same enemy after the first time you tell them to attack, except when you imput something else, in which case they'll do that first and then go back to attacking.

you DO have full control over how they act, in a way. they only do what you tell them to, and you can still control them, because all inputs you make for a character will instantly override a gambit command. i'm still telling my characters what to do, constantly, but the gambits are always on in the background, keeping me perma-buffed, lol. i don't like having to manually cast shellga 80 times on a boss fight. so i kinda lean on my buffs in that area.
it really is all a matter of opinion, though. try both, and see how they fit you.
if you DO set any gambits, though, be careful. you don't want to make something that accidentally drains all of your magic, or maybe even allows your characters to die because you put attack before heal xD

i suppose but the way i see it, without gambits, at least you have full control of your characters. With gambits, you may as well have a party of guests
