To give you some background, I used to build gaming PC's all the time, but haven't done so since about 2003. About that time I graduated college, started my first job, bought a laptop, etc etc etc.

I've decided that I want to build my own PC again. Assuming that nothing has fundamentally changed with the assembly process since 2003, I figure I should be good to go. Unfortunately, I haven't kept up with what's going on in the hardware market, so I have to start from scratch in that area (that's where I'm counting on you guys!)

I want to spend between $1,000 and $1,500 on my new machine. I assume newegg.com is still the best place to buy parts? I'm looking for a machine that will handle HD/Blu-Ray movies, fast decoding, and be able to play the latest games. I'll also need a new monitor as well, so please factor that into the price. I'm sure it goes without saying, I'd like to future proof this machine the best I can. Oh yeah, I'll need to buy a copy of Windows7Pro (full) as well.

Thanks in advance for your help! Looking to buy soon.

If I hsd $500 for just the processor I wouldnt mind going with an intel processor. Generally below that price point amd has a better price/performace. Sometimes intel does win below the $500 mark but not often.

I'd still get Intel.

im baffled as to why people always prefer intel over AMD. its like people having problems with black doctors or something. AMD have the best processors in terms of the performance to price ratio.

Both AMD and Intel would be a good choice for you.

There is absolutely no debating that Intel chips are generally faster then their AMD counterparts, but AMD Chips offer tons of performance anyway.

In reality unless you're doing something very CPU intensive you wont notice a difference.

Let me know if there's anything I missed.

What you have there is AMD's best CPU, a quad core at 3.4ghz.
4gb of some of the fastest (lowest timings) ddr3 1600mhz.
Two of ATI's highest clocked HD 4890's.
One of the best cases for cooling.
23" screen, for only $10 more than the original 22" that was suggested, with full 1080p resolution.
Kept the same mouse and keyboard as the other as they are pretty good.

The amd cpu I suggested will give you just about the same performance as the i7 860 give or take a few % for $90 less which allowed room for the second hd 4890. The second card will greatly improve your performance in games compared to keeping the intel cpu. Also, there's almost no chance at all that you'll get a bad socket with the amd boards.

Any suggestions from anyone?
Interesting.. an AMD build. Does anyone have any counterpoints why I should go with Intel instead.

To make it simple, just find a mobo that goes into the current build that doesnt use a foxconn socket. Maybe before long there will be very few 1156 mobos on the market that have foxconn so they will be easier to avoid.
