yesterday i got two budgies, and i havent seen them eat or drink yet. theyre pretty young, with one of them only starting to get the blue around the nostrils (the other one already has it), and i know that theyd need a bit of time to adjust to their new environment, but im just worried that theyll starve themselves to death or die of thirst. how long without food or water could they go before i should start to get worried? and no, theyre not tame. i dont think i should try anything until theyre at least eating and drinking normally.

update: i sold the birds a few weeks ago. it was for the best. never got attached to them, and the woman who bought it had multiple budgies already.
Quite a journey you've had with those birds (just read through the whole post)... And yes, birds will starve themselves rather than eat something they do not recognize as food.

i just remembered this thread, so i will explain something that happened a while ago - i was in another city for a couple of days, and i had asked my mother to watch the birds (we live in the same house, but they are my birds, so i look after them). the bird food needed to be replaced, as they had nearly finished it off in the cage. anyway, my mother forgot to feed them, so when i came back, they were silent, puffed up, and when i took one of them out of the case, you could clearly feel he was weak. as i went to get more food, an idea hit me - to try and see if he will eat some vegetables for once. grabbed a leaf of spinach, tore a little piece of, and offered it to my bird. he didnt take it. i left it next to him for a few minutes, and nothing. he just sat there. i tried pushing it up towards his beak. nothing (though i didnt expect otherwise tbh). i gave up and got the seeds, and it became a feeding frenzy, so to speak. so...my birds would rather starve, than eat veggies? i mean, surely spinach isnt THAT bad!
anyway, short of force feeding them (which i dont intend to do, of course), i think ill just give up with this.

Random bird
HaHa......Well im certainly Lucky, When i got my first parakeet, he started to Eat within 6 hours. Also, he has a clam personality so it makes it easier to tame him, im still trying to pet Willy (The parakeet) at the wing, back, head, and his chin. Also trying to get him used/drinking water....Now im getting off topic here xD
When they get to the point of biting you hard,(where you are now) I'd suggest to start over the training where you have to get them used to you, like being by the cage, when i first got Willy, I'd play my DSI or i just read a book by the cage. When you're reading a book, Read it out loud softly. When they don't fly everywhere in the cage when you come in anymore, Start the training where you get them to get used to your hand, Try Clicking and Whistling while your doing this, I don't know why but it kinda calms them down and makes it easier to tame, (well the clicking/whistling worked for me....)when you can touch them, (like the basics, the claws and belly) Try getting them on a small perch, encourage them to go on by giving them a treat, when they get use the the perch, put your finger 2 inches from the perch, then 1 inch, then Ditch the Perch and use your finger, remember to go at the bird's pace. I suppose they will fly around when you do this, ~Tip: since you have two birds, i strongly advise you to put one bird in a different room, where it is safe Like it can't be hurt and etc.,and then start to train the bird that is still in the cage.~After that, you can try taking the bird out of it's cage, It's first reaction Should be when you almost take the bird outside, it will try to stay close by the cage, like it would fly back towards it,or it would climb to the top of the cage. Try to take your bird out often so it will be used to get out of the cage and won't do that anymore, then try to hand feed it. I think this increases trust alot so try that. Do that alot and it will start to trust you even more. So now your birds should be tamed now.... There are different answers from mine, so yea x3 Good luck! ~Wow, i sure did type alot...D:~

alright, its been a while now, and i still havent made any damn progress with them. im desperate here. i need the most extreme method there is to get these birds used to me, even if it risks making things worse. im now so sick of them being simple decoration that it has now become extremely irritating.

OK I take it you aren't going to swap Boris, or whatever it's now called, in for another.

well when i got them, one had nothing on the nostrils, and the other had the blue. only recently did i notice the pink only just starting to develop on the other. apparently they were both around the same age according to the person at the pet store.
now i need to think of a new name for her. damn...boris was a funny name.

Were your birds quite young then? Wilbert is probably too keen to come out of the cage these days. He has no interest in escaping entirely but always likes nibbling at the wires and eating whatever inedible stuff there is on the floor.

major problem! it turns out that its not two male birds. theres a female. i only started noticing this when one took a peculiar interest in the other, and tried to mount (they probably havent yet because it seems impossible to do it on perches). upon closer inspection, i noticed the nostrils had turned pinkish on the female. this would probably explain why theyre so unreceptive, but i know now that they wont ever talk, or at least it would be almost impossible to teach them, and its going to also be near impossible to get them out.
oh dear...
