Darkfall is an MMORPG developed by Aventurine, a small company based in Greece. The game is geared towards pvp, on the principle that pvp should the basis of an MMO, and not a feature added afterwards just so it's there. What you do in Darkfall has a real effect on the game world and you can truly build your legacy in whatever mould you choose. In a very basic sense, Darkfall is about the freedom to do exactly what you want within a scope of realistic consequence.
What are the key features of Darkfall?
No Levels : Darkfall uses a skills system, with a complex soft/hard cap system that ensures its not hard to be competitive.
Non-consentual Pvp : You can attack or be attacked absolutely anywhere in the World, at any time, by any player.
Alignement System : Your playstyle will effect how other players react to you (see below).
Full loot : Every single item can be looted from your corpse, including all your equipment.
FPS/TPS Gameplay : Ranged attacks are FPS, Melee is TPS (tight).
Manual Targetting : Everything is targetted manually
Friendly-Fire : Whether attacking or healing, whoever it hits is who it effects. FF is on everywhere.
No Radar : Detecting your enemies is entirely bases on your senses.
Minimal-HUD : You can't drag up everyones bars, everything will be "light" so you actually watch the game and not 50 bars.
Backpack Slots : There are no slots in containers, only weight restrictions. Example.
SCS : You can have a single character only for each game server.
No Instances : The game is one seamless world capable of supporting 10,000 simultaneous players.
Crafting : Almost every item in game can be player crafted. There are no epics or ultra-special items.
New Characters : Your new character is not useless. In Darkfall, 4 new characters are about as strong as a vet character, assuming equal skill.
Skills : There are approx 500 skills and 500 spells in DF. About 5% of these are race specific.
No Stealth : Being hidden will be entirely visual/sound based.
Racial Language : Everyone can chat with everyone, regardless of race. You can even play together.
What races can I play?
Darkfall has 6 playable races, each with different relations that affect how you can play and the alignement effects.
Humans: Allied with Dwarves and Mirdain. Hostile with all others. Dwarves: Allied with Humans, neutral with Mirdain, hostile with all others. Mirdain: Allied with humans, neutral with Dwarves, hostile to all others. Orks: Neutral/allied with Mahirim(it's a bit unclear), hostile to all others Mahirim: Neutral/allied with Orks, hostile to all others Alfar: Hostile to all others.

What's the purpose/incentive for pvp?
All over Agon, the World of Darkfall, there is around 100 strategic Clan Stones. These can be captured and held by a clan. A Clan controlling a Clan Stone has control over the area and can build large cities that give huge benefits. A clan will decide the laws it wishes to apply within it's own city and area. Of course, these benefits will be desirable to all, and there will be constant struggles to capture and defend these locations, but this is by no means an easy feat.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some FAQs compiled from developer comments.
There are mounts in Darkfall, but they are not overly expensive or elusive like in some MMOs. Also, mounts can be stolen or killed from under you.
What is the alignment system?
Darkfall uses an alignment system that has various effects. If you attack someone of a friendly race, then you lose alignment. If you kill someone of enemy race, you gain alignment. This can be scaled from -100 to +100 depending on how you play. To give a real example, if you are a Human and playing with your friend who was an Ork, and a Dwarf comes along and attacks your Ork friend, you then have to consider alignment. As a human you are allied to Dwarves so if you attack him, you lose alignment. If you heal your Ork friend, you lose alignment because they're racially your enemy. Of course, whether you care or not about alignement is entirely up to you; you can still attack the Dwarf and heal your friend, but there are other implications.
Say you've helped your Ork friend to kill the Dwarf and you find yourself with negative alignment. Depending on how bad it is, you will have some difficulty in entering certain cities. Since Clans own cities, they also set the rules. Now, some clans may let you in no problems, however others you may find the guards or other players don't want you in there and attack you on sight. Some clans may specifically run cities/towns as outlets for criminal players. Furthermore, players with negative alignment can be attacked by allied races with no alignment implications for them.
Any gameplay videos?
Here is a youtube video. It's very old and the graphics aren't as good as the game will be, but it's a nice video:
