I had to fight him twice. Both times, I used Sonic, Ike, Samus, Donkey Kong, Mario, and Link in that order. The first time, I got owned, but the second time, I beat him on Mario, didn't even have to use Link.
I only did it on Normal, though. If you're trying it on Hard, I'm afraid I can't help.

When tabun uses his wing attack you can avoid it by staying on the ground, ducking.

I beat Tabuu on hard, I used meta knight fox falco sonic Mario and luigi. Meta knight fox and falco rack up damage while sonic Mario and luigi special attack him.
If someone could make a video on how to dodge the ring attack, that will be nice.
Just use Shield + Down whenever the rings come close.

Sonic DK Samus King Dedede Mario Kirby
if there is one too many characters in that list, Don't use Mario. :P

Depends. In the story mode, you can bring characters buffed up by stickers that raise launch resistance and attack power. In boss rush, you have to learn his timing perfectly, if you desire to ever beat him on intense.

I was fighting Tabuu with Sonic, Mario, Kirby, Zelda, Link and Ganondorf.
I was doing good, but he was beating everyone left and right because I can't dodge the ring attack.
It came down to Zelda vs Tabuu, Tabuu got really big, then Zelda got a super mushroom and epically dived right into him finishing him off, she was about to die, but Tabuu died before she was koed.
Link and Ganon didn't get to fight, but oh well, it worked out.
Super Mushroom? You get items during boss fights?
