I have also read from an article that you can have your phone unlocked by calling your phone service provider and tell them that you will be going out the country. If you do so, your phone service provider will give you some advice as well as have your phone unlocked. I am not so sure if this is going to work but I just thought I'll share this. I hope it can somehow help.

^ your point is correct. I can buy unlock code from lots of store in my country. The standard price is as below:
Hi there are many providers found online who help you unlock your phone safely and easily.I recommend you to visit http://www.theunlockarena.com/ here they ask you the mobile model ,country and the network name to which your mobile is locked and the IMEI number of your mobile .then they deliver you code to unlock your phone.

Unless you bought it unlocked. It's locked by subsidy, which is the service you have.
Call your phone company and see if they'll unlock it for you. Very rare but it can happen.
ESNs are also tied to your service, so if you sell your phone, which I recently did, you have to get that cleared from your account too since they want these phones to be within their network.
Just like how the iPhone is only on AT&T... even if you bought one, you can't use it on Sprint (unless you're the rich hacker kid).
