The problem is, which people think is the solution, is switching it off every couple of hours then putting it back on a short while later. Constantly cooling down and heating back up again is bad for it.
My PS3 is on for about 18 hours a day (share it with my brother) and it's been fine. I've had it 3 years now

My brother used to accidentally turn my off mine cause he hooked his DS3 up to mine a few times then back to his PS3. When he would turn his system on and off my system would act accordingly.

I had the same problem where I was downloading something off the PlayStation store so I left it and went and did other things. I came back and my ps3 was turned off and the red light was flashing. I simply unplugged the power source waited a couple of seconds than plugged it back in. Ever since it has been working pretty smoothly.

That's your power supply going bad, pick one up from eBay for 20 bucks and do it yourself or if you're under warranty ship it to Sony. Or ship it to them and pay150 if you're out of warranty.
