The Open Mic Guide

What This Thread Is
This thread is a guide to Neo Emcee's Open Mic. This first post is an introduction to the forum, designed to fill you in on anything you might be uncertain about in a matter of minutes. The rest is a guide to Open Mic's history, which, if interested, you can browse at your leisure, but reading just this first post will teach you the ropes of the forum.

A Brief Note On Attitude
This is a forum for enthusiasts of lyricism to socialise, express themselves through their lyrics and to compete, much like a sport. Although the focus of Open Mic is rap and hip hop culture, we are not a bunch of shit-talking wannabe-thugs, nor do we welcome that attitude. Members often jokingly insult each other, but that doesn't mean it's a smart idea to join the forum by dissing everyone that talks to you or bragging that you're the best. The best approach to participating is just to be yourself, be respectful, and remember that what people say in battles isn't any more real than someone beating you in a first person shooter meaning they really want to kill you. Just keep your cool, and if in doubt, PM one of the moderators of the forum with any questions you have, listed below:

    What You Can Do Here
Open Mic is more than a battle forum, and there's plenty more to do than compete head to head lyrically. Depending on what you feel like there are several things you can do:

Battling: Battling can be broken down into 5 steps:

1: First you need an opponent to battle. To find one, go to the Terrordome thread stickied at the top of the forum and post a challenge, including any specific details you have in mind, or accept one already posted. The Terrordome has a detailed explanation of battling, which is worth reading, but put very simply, you need to agree on 4 things with your opponent before starting.

  • Number Of Rounds: Either a 1 round match, or best of 3.
  • Lines Per Round: How many lines you may spit per round.
  • Reply Time: How long the person going 2nd has to reply.
  • Feeding (Allowed Or Not): Whether the person going 2nd can reply to the 1st person's lines to try to counter them.

As a guideline a normal battle is 3 rounds, 24 line limit, 72 hours reply time, and feeding allowed except in round 3.

2: Once the rules are settled, one of you should create a new thread for you to battle in. The first post should include the rules that you have agreed on, and the thread title should closely resemble the following format:

    Emcee 1 [0] Vs Emcee 2 [0]

Put the name of one Emcee, followed by a 0 in brackets, then a "Vs" followed by the same with the second Emcee's name. The zeroes in brackets are for keeping track of how many rounds each Emcee has won and should be updated after each round accordingly. You're now ready to start battling.

3: Agree between you who will go 1st. That person then writes and posts their verse, then the 2nd Emcee writes and posts their verse, feeding of the 1st Emcee's if that's allowed. A verse consists of a number of lines usually put into rhyming pairs called bars, up to the agreed number of lines per round. Look at some of the past battles of the forum to get a better idea if you need to.

Remember that when battling, the things you and your opponent say should not be taken to heart. It is a competition and the idea is to insult your opponent mercilessly, so don't take it any of it personally. However, while battles are almost no holds barred (or bars held), there are some things that are not allowed by Neoseeker's rules. Racial slurs are forbidden, as is outright swearing. If you want to use the F word or any other non-racial abuse in a spit, then imply it but do not directly type it, for example by putting f*** (you'll need to use Neoseeker tags to prevent that being bleeped out, though, but this is not an excuse to bypass the censors freely, so don't abuse it).

4: Once both verses are posted, the battle is ready to be judged. The person that made the thread should edit the thread title to indicate so, by doing the following:

    Emcee 1 [0] Vs Emcee 2 [0]*

Adding a * to the end is our way of showing judges that a battle is ready for them to decide. Most members use about 3 *, and there is no hard rule, but don't get carried away.

5: Official Open Mic judges will post votes on the battle, scoring both verses, providing feedback and saying who they thought won the round. The 1st Emcee that gets 2 votes wins the round, at which point either the next round begins, or the battle is finished when one Emcee wins the number of rounds agreed upon. In 3 round matches, normally the Emcee that went 1st round 1 posts 2nd the next round.

Writing: If you're not interested in battling but would rather just write lyrics, be they free-styles, raps, songs, or collaborations with other Emcees, then feel free to post them in the Typestyle's Anonymous Nightclub thread (currently in its 4rth instalment). Don't be discouraged if you don't get any feedback or comments, as people are sometimes simply too busy to read through all the raps posted around the forum. Just use it as a place to display your work, write without expectations and express yourself as a person.

Alternatively, if you want to create a more personal collection, you may make a thread for your raps with a name of your choice, in a similar fashion to a real life album. In this thread you can post anything that you've created, including work you did with other Emcees, perhaps to showcase a certain style of yours, or maybe with links to recorded audio material you've done, it's up to you.

Other Activities: There are plenty of other fun things you can do, some of which take less than a minute.

  • The Cut: This is Open Mic's general discussion thread, stickied towards the top of the forum, which has had over 70 editions and is a great place to do almost anything - socialise, joke around, share interests, and pretty much anything else you can think of. The Cut is an extremely chilled place, where forum veterans and newcomers alike do anything from have serious, in-depth discussions on hip hop, to insulting each other jokingly for shared amusement.
  • Open Mic Roster: If you decide to stick around this is a good place to announce it to the forum and let everyone know (currently in its second edition).
  • Rhyme With Us: This thread (currently in its twelfth edition), is an on-going cipher in which you post three lines, rhyming off the post before you and then switching to a different rhyme pattern by the end for the next person to continue from. It's a quick and fun, never-ending collaboration for everyone in the forum to enjoy.
  • Royal Rumble: If you feel like a quick fight but don't want to do a full battle, this thread (currently in its fourth installation) may be what you're looking for. The Royal Rumble is similar to the Rhyme With Us thread, however the key difference being you insult the person above you for as little or as long as you like. Although be prepared to be insulted by the person who posts after you. It's a non-stop verbal brawl you can jump in and out of as you please - great for a quick lyrical rumble with no long-term commitments like battles have.
  • Word play: A great place to express your creativity, like the Rhyme With Us and Royal Rumble threads this thread lets you respond to the person above you, this time by flipping their bars in your own style.
  • Neo Hit Lists: If you have any particular people you've set your sights on, you may compose and post a hit list in this thread (second edition). It's as a fun, easy way to build excitement and discussion around battles.
  • Neo Emcee Quotable: Sometimes people will post quotes from other Emcees on Open Mic (note: NOT from other forums or real rappers) that really impressed them in this thread (the current thread being the second version). It's a good place to show respect to people that you feel wrote something really noteworthy, even if it was only one line, and to read up on outstanding gems from Open Mic's history.
  • Open Mic's Emcee Profiles: If you take an interest in developing a hobbyist career here, then a fair few MCs have created biographies of what they've done here, such as battle records, Typestyles and other achievements. This is the thread to find these things in, or create your own.
  • Feedback From The Forum: You can post absolutely any feedback on the forum, from the smallest suggestions - like a new forum header - to revolutionary new concepts in this thread (currently in the third edition) which is there to propose and discuss such things with everyone.
  • Lastly, if you want to get into this forum more, then the rest of this thread has a detailed history of Open Mic dating back to before the inception of the forum. If you wish to contribute further at any point, you can do so by applying to be a judge, although first you must prove yourself to be mature, unbiased and able to understand the intricacies of lyrical quality, or sharing ideas in the above feedback thread. Most of all, simply participate!

That's the basics covered, you'll discover the rest as you hang around and interact with other members. Remember that any experience is what you make of it, so whether you only write the occasional rap in the Typestyles thread and post in Rhyme With Us once in awhile, or battle often and spend lots of time here, be sociable, follow the rules, and most importantly of all have fun. That's what this forum is for.

    re: The "Felony Appreciation" thread

Open Mic :: Prelude to a Forum

March 14th, 2002, Open Mic was born unto dizzieko02, our founding father, under the original name of "Neo emcee's" - a day later changed to "Neo emcee's (open mic night)" and after several short-term comical names, the final "[The Original] Neo Emcee's Open Mic Night" was rested upon.

A little over a year later, on March 26, 2003 the thread reached 31 pages, and was closed by KFC_Or_Bust, after TheGame hHh (now known as U_Turn) created a new thread, creatively named "Neo Emcee's Open Mic Night Pt2".

The second thread in the series lasted 59 pages and held the first Tag Team Tournament, which gave Open Mic the first ever champions we've had; Dizzieko02, and awhollywood0838.

May 07, 2003, saw King create the petition which would be the corner stone for Open Mic getting it's own forum. A week later, on May 14th, 2003, Neo Emcee's Open Mic (the forum) was conceived.

The Neo Emcee Heavyweight Championship Title History
    view.history
The Heavyweight title was what got the ball rolling with all the championships which followed. Championships were original thought of back in May 2003, and after some discussion, it was decided that the first title to be released should be the Lightweight (now known as Middleweight) title, however, as stated, the original idea stemmed from a Heavyweight championship. However, it wasn't until over two years after, that the title was brought into circulation - Season ended in April 2005, where we crowned ViscousSpike as our first Heavyweight champion.

Did you know that this was the last title to be made, even though it was one of the original ones to be thought of? It also took the longest to make. We'd run out of title's to adjust, and this one was supposed to be special, and look different from the others, and doing that proved difficult.

The Neo Emcee Lightweight / Middleweight Championship History
    view.history
The original singles title! The one with the most history - hell, it has more history here than most members. The title was originally created as the Lightweight title, until October of 2003, when it was officially changed to the Middleweight title - due to the Featherweight title/tournament getting underway, and the whole forum's structure being shifted. So from October 2003, we no longer had the Heavyweight division and Lightweight division, but instead had the Heavyweight, Middleweight, and Featherweight divisions.

The "Did you know fact" for this title, being that the first tournament for the actual Middleweight title, was the April Madness Middleweight tournament, and therefore the first winner of the title was Felony. However the first official match for the title, was Kaotic vs. Phantasy_Lord.

The Neo Emcee Featherweight Championship Title History
    view.history
First thought of in May 2003, as an odd-job division weight, however was never really seriously considered until October 2003 - to satisfy the need for up and coming emcees to have something to strive for. We crowned Phantasy_Lord as our first Featherweight champion in January 2004. This has always been the most active title, and has been the one to hold the most tournaments, beside it being the newest.

'Did you know' that the Tag Team title, and the Featherweight title are actually made from the same image? Just creatively edited, to change the color and shape of title, making them look quite different.

The Neo Emcee Tag-Team Championship Title History
    view.history
This was officially the first championship that Open Mic ever had. The title's were won by dizzieko02 & awhollywood0838 in the pre-forum era, however never really went much further than this, until recently, with Furious Faction & King [Chronical] won the titles.

The Tag Title's fun fact, being that there was actually a second tournament held in November 2003, which saw our first tournament which allowed members from outside the forum, to judge the battles. However the tournament quickly broke down, and was postponed - never to be restarted.

Open Mic :: Thread History Cut to the Core

Open Mic :: Thread History Cut to the Core

      The Cut!
Open Mic's longest on-going thread, was than, and is now still, called "The Cut" - Open Mic's very own general discussion thread. Over the years we've discussed everything - every tournament, and all the top battles to what's happening in the hip-hop world generally.

To this day, parts of dizzieko02's original first post in The Cut is being quoted in all the newly created Cuts, and has now become a widely known tradition.

        quote dizzieko02
This is The Cut and I'm not talking about Cut in the literary sense foo!

The Cut, a place to chill out and talk about happenings in the Open Mic Thread or in the hip hop world. If you want to share your reactions after a battle, this is the place. If you have an axe to grind or something to get off your chest, this is the place. If you want to run smack on a sucka M.C. patrolling this board, welcome to The Cut.
For the 50th anniversary, thread creator King added his own quote in place of Dizzie's as a sort of milestone for the forum. Dizzie's is still used in other Cuts since as is King's most of the time.

        quote King
You guys know the drill stop in here to chop it up about anything on your mind. Also instead of spamming threads with
When The Cut 53 closed, M_N_M48060 created Da Kut Fif Tee For, which was opposed by The Cut 54 (started by Adidas0167). In the end a friendly battle was held to decide the superior GD. The Illest Cut War Of 54 featured Furious Faction, Jecht 44 and Wile E Daigo on the side of The Cut and M_N_M48060, Fyrestorm and metafor on the side of Da Kut in a one round, 3 a side tag battle. Da Kut's team won and The Cut 54 was closed at page 29, Da Kut running until page 31.

With over 70 editions of The Cut, we're still going strong, and though the users have changed, we're still having the same laughs, and great times that this forum is known for.
      Lets Get Ready To Rumble!
This is the official 'make a challenge' thread. The thread's name has always stayed the same, beside the second instalment, which King creatively named "Let's Get Ready "2" Rumble" - although the idea for the "2" was Jn_Josh's idea. After 10 editions, the thread name was changed to "Welcome To The Terrordome" by Wile E Daigo.
      The Judges Chamber!
The Judges Chamber is something which separates us from other forums which are about text battling. Most forums just allow anyone with enough battles/posts to throw down votes, without any real voting system. We on the other hand, have a full out voting system.

Something most fellas wont remember was back in the day when we had an Enjoyability category. And everything used to be out of 20, whereas now, things are out of 26. We haven't had too many changes in the voting system, beside the aforementioned, and the Advanced Format being instated into the forum.

The Advanced Format was an addition to the forum which didn't last too long - due to how long it was taken to vote, and we soon went back to the Basic Format.
      Crew Discussions!
Nothing too complicated has ever gone on with this thread, and as the title states, the discussion in these threads pertain to crews. However the first thread was named "Crew Results" because it original was just about whether crew members would like a seperate post in the records thread, then eventually after 12 pages King decided that as the thread was turning into a discussion, he'd change the title and purpose of the thread.
      Neo Emcee's 2 Year Anniversary All-Star Freestyle!
The first anniversary typestyle, where the members of the forum who were around during the thread days, gathered together and spat what was on their mind. The typestyle was posted on March 14, 2004 and repped everyone in chronological order from their first appearance in the Open Mic Threads, except for Lojik & King.
      Neo Emcee's 3 year anniversary All-Star Feestyle!
The second anniversary typestyle, was one which allowed much wider participation than it's predecessor. Which was cool. 16 Emcees. 65 lines. 3 years.
      Open Mic's Emcee Profiles!
Really simple here, this is, as the name would suggest, a comprehnsive archive of the emcee's who have posted up their own personal profiles. Updated by themselves, this thread contains some great achievements in it.
      The School of Hard Knocks!
The thread was created by Lojik (then known as Jim Raynor) and was dedicated to help up-and-coming emcees at the forum. And it's definitely a must read if you're attempting to gain more experience without having to battle to read judges' IC's.
      Open Mic Casino!
Our casino has been made twice, but has never really got off the ground either time. The betting system is pretty simple, and all you have to do is put some units on someone, and hope they win.
      Open Mic's Hall Of Fame!
The first thread was pretty unofficial and was actually first intended to be about your favourite lines by a Neo Emcee - which we now have in the form of the Neo Emcee Quotable thread. King then closed the thread and created the official Open Mic hall of fame, which currently consists of dizzeko02; awhollywood0838; and speedsk8er.
      Neo Emcee Titles!
Throughout this thread, I've mentioned the above thread quite a few times - it's had some of the most original ideas we've seen in this forum and really laid the path down for the Open Mic you see today.
      Hall of Shame!
The Hall of Shame thread is pretty much the oposite of the Hall of Fame - which is pretty obvious. It contains all the biters and bitches we've had in this forum - ranging from Ying, to Sam_e P.

Open Mic :: The Original Rhymers

Open Mic :: The Original Rhymers

      Rhyme With Us!
Originaly the "Rhyme With Us" thread was totally different from the thread which you guys know today. The original idea, was for ten posts in a row, to make ten lines which rhymed with each other. However, this was shortly changed (thanks to Dutch Samurai), due to it 'not being fun enough, and too repetitive'. It was changed to people being allowed to post two lines, the first which rhymed with the line above, and the second line being a totally new one.

Later on, in May 2004, the thread was changed to three lines, and that is now what you see today. However, as a couple of you may remember, over the years we've had a couple of different topics, such as, movies.
      Neo-Emcee Royal Rumble!
The original thread to aid you when dissing someone. The first thread was created in June 2003, by Speedsk8er. Nothing serious, and it's all in good fun. The thread has lasted for four sessions and is still going strong to this day.
      Typestyle's Anonymous Nightclub!
The Typestyle's Anonymous Nightclub series has always been a place where people could just come and put up anything that's been on their mind.

It's a place to chill out, and as awhollywood0838 said: "Here at Typestyle's anonymous we only ask you to give us your mind, heart, and soul. Nothing else, just yourself..."
      The Acronym House!
Most people probably wont even remember this thread, as it really didn't last long - August 2003 to May 2004. There was a simple vibe to it, and all it took was for you to make an acronym rhyme out of the name of the person who posted before you.
