The bottom line is that they're not going to do anything they think will put your health at risk. Having been born here, I'm not really sure what the medical requirements are for the visa, but if you tell them of your concerns they'll do all they can to make you feel comfortable and safe

Plus, if you end up having to get a blood test it's always handy to know that everything with you is alright!

needles are nothing to worry about. if youre that afraid of them, just look away. you will still feel it, but it wont be as painful...its something psychological, just like a magnifying glass makes the pain seem worse.

be glad youre not in sweden. they take 6 *bleep*ing vials of blood from you for a full blood test, and always seem to botch the blood draw itself. every time i get a blood test, i end up with an ugly yellow bruise that is a third of my arms length in diameter. every doc in aus did a perfect job with it, and only needed one vial.

you know whats a horrendous needle to have in you? the one used for bone marrow. i wouldnt wish for my greatest enemies to endure that kind of suffering. that, or a lumbar puncture. i hope i never have either one of those.

Ben73, what's involved in a category 1 medical? And why do you have to do it every year?

I had to do a medical before starting work but there was no blood test. There was...a pee test, an exercise test (apparently I have low upper body strength :<), a hearing test, a sight test, a full questionnaire about your medical history and any colds you've had in the past...Took like 3 hours >> But you only have to do it once before starting the job (and only repeatedly if they suspect you of something). At work there's a mandatory breath test every morning (because on a mine site there's heavy machinery and they can't have anyone blowing numbers at ALL) and on occasion there's pee tests. But I've been here 6 months and haven't been pulled up for one yet.

Mining industry is strict, but at least we don't do blood tests =/

Man, that sucks...but at least you get to know your'e healthy every few years? It'd be good to catch any early-warnings of serious conditions.
