I play quite a lot and play my own variation of the king's indian defence for white and black. My rating is dreadful, and like here, I am called Been on Fritz 8

I really enjoy watching chess, and playing it is even more fun...It is easy to play over the net, and generally good fun.

yeah. you got to admit, now, every classic game has the simpsons feature in it. let's see. marge is the queen. homer is the king. lisa is the bishop? and bart is the knight. and maggie is the pawn, but who is the rook? Not quite King: homer Queen: marge Bishop: Lisa Knight: maggy on a rocking horse Rook: Grandpa Pawn: Bart just think, bart grows up to be marge...hmm...and grandpa can mover further than bart... I know a friend who plays the caro-can ver well, my dad plays the grand-pris against me...which kinds of screws me over...

The opening you posted is called fool's mate....and there are many ways to stop it...simply by playing knight f6 the trick ends. You also are left with a crappy position if it does not work. A fienchetto (something I play) also stops fool's mate...

There are different archfiend cards in YuGiOh that if you look are based on the game of chess. There is a knight/sishop/rook/soldier/queen/king and in the background there are chess board pieces...

I recently came joint third in an international tournement in europe - not an open of course, but it was quite fun. I kind of shot myself in the foot though, I took an early draw in one of the rounds because I wanted manchester united vs everton on TV: a great game so well worth it....

4 wins, 2 draws, not bad actually, espechially in a line that I don't play - I had to make up an opening against the expected winner of the tournement (I drew as black, I used a stupid tactic). It started: 1 d4 - d5 2 c4 - c6 3 nc3 - nf6 - why did he have to play this line against me?

quoteThen how about King's Indian Defense? That is what it ended up as, at about move 12, I had fianchettoed kings side, had a knight on d7 and pawns on d5, e6 and c6... I like using the kings indian defence, but I then like to evolve, eventually I ended up with the two central pawns and he had pawns on the b and c file, he pushed them to the 7th rank and I eventually squashed them... 60 euros is about $60-70...see, not bad...

I always play the grand prix attack against the sicilian, simply as white play e4, f4 and n-f3, then either d3 and bishop e3 or fianchetto kings side...

This is your point of error in my opinion - have you tried n-c6? Bb5 will pin the Knight to my King which create subtle amount of pressure and my opponent will be ready to castle Kingside. P.S. Do you happen to know your FIDE rating, Been? B-d5? To reply you play b-d7. I believe my FIDE rating is supposedly about 1600-1700. I think that is about right? What is yours?

Nc3 blocks the check, develop the Knight and defending the Bishop. If Qxb5 and then Nxb5, Nxd4, Nxd4, and then I will be behind in the development of my Knight. You donm't take the knight at this point, when white plays n-c4 black then plays b-d7

If the queen returns to d4 as it often does, to move away form the sicillian, I would play g6 and move into the fianchetto, this attacks the knight, and puts pressure on the b2 pawn, which would most likely want to attack the queen at a later stage.
...and the game is ended with black having 2 central pawns, which most people would say is a clear advantage.

quoteThe cool thing is that I learned to play Chess in Janurary and I have already won one tournament. I consider myself to be poor in the opening, but pick the game up in the mid game. I would like to have a better knowledge of openings in general, but my memory is not good enough to remember the openings to the level I want to. With other games I seem to pick up certain factors quickly, but with chess I often tend to miss subtle but important factors...

I like the kings indian defence, the benomi and the grand prix attack, as well as the pirc. I hate the sicillian opening played as black, I always seem to get into hot-water aboit move 16, 17 - and never clear it up until about move 25ish and by then I have already somehow mad e a mistake or lost a critical edge...

A draw - ouch, thats rough.
I open with E4 myself, but most people play D4. E4 is really classical, but d4 is alternative. I open with d4 at all times in serious competitive play. I lack knowledge and attacking strategy in the E4 opening. D4, on the other hand is purely positional. As much as I would like to agree I can't. Everyone knows that D4 is effectively the main line for the king's indian defence, and that E4 naturally allows pressure to be increased on the F-file easily. Most people play D4 through force of habit, E4 is for the small part of the population that does not want to follow the authodix and instead intends to move in with F4 at dome stage and heaven forbid G4 at some stage with F5 afterwards in the form of the grand prix attack...

re: Chess - what do you think of it?
|
quote Yugi Muto
There are a couple of strategies that is often worth noticing:
1. Do not castle in the direction of the enemy's Queen and fianchettoed bishop unless you can somehow organize a conter-attack on the other wing.
Not always the case, but a general rule yes.
2. Never move the f-pawn early in the game.
The grand-prix attack, one of the most famous openings ever involves playing 2: p-f4
3. Aim to block opponent's fianchettoed bishop by pawns, making it merely an inferior minor piece.
Yes, but only central pieces. Anymore and you are simply wasting time because the bishop will simply hide run away via the rooks position.
4. Do NOT move Queen too early in the game. Station the Queen behind the wall of pawns to keep her safe in the opening.
Again not always the case: if you can double c/f pawns then bishop and queen advancement early on can cause chaos.
5. Bishop is usually 70% better than Knight in most situation.
No - wrong. They are 50/50 in terms of quality. Central positions ar easier to hold with knights and closed positions in general, whereas bishops are better in more open positions and stpping run-away pawns.
6. Look for open files for your Rooks.
Or pushing pawns/pins, but as an amteurish rule yes it is a good idea.
7. Once an open file is created, double your rooks there.
If it leads no-where?
8. It is always good to keep the pawns in front of the King right where it is.
Most of the time yes - not always.
9. Prevent the pinning of your Knight to the Queen by opponent's Bishop by moving h3/h6 beforehand.
Not always important to a player - I get it all the time and I fianchetto so I don't give a damn.
10. Do not give up. Keep fighting in a tight situation.
I will remember that when playing kramnic - when I'm screwed, carry on. That won't insult him...?
