here's an almighty chokeslam (with wrist hold).

eleven tips:

1: always move all characters on every frame, even if they're not meant to be moving, even if it's very slight adjustment.

2: be mindful of the momentum of where things are swinging. if you remember that an unimportant arm is moving to the left, or rotating clockwise, or folding up, then carrying that on consistently will make the whole thing look much smoother. if your figure is moving forwards, each frame should carry the overall (hip) position of that figure forwards by a reasonable amount, and only then should you position the legs, etc. if your figure moves forwards and then backwards mid-motion, with no swinging arms or legs to make that happen, it looks bad. this also goes for height.

3: know when things should take longer times than other things, and when they do, have the patience to make very slight movements from frame to frame.

4: keep an eye on the footing. if you step on the ground, your foot isn't going to slip at all, so the foot which is down on one frame will be in the exact same position on the next unless it's lifted up. for walking, always keep one foot in the same position as the previous frame at any one time (change feet by keeping both in the same position for 1 frame). for running, you might be in the air at some point, but try to make the landing place realistic, foot-wise. footing includes hands and knees for things like handstands, pushing yourself up from the ground, and kneeling.

5: a jump starts with bouncing down a bit.

6: with any strike, always have frames showing the offensive part connecting with the victimised part. if you put the offender through the victim, it will look messy. if you put it just before the victim, the strike will look like it missed.

7: with strikes or swings, spend more frames on the before and after, and less frames on the through motion. for instance, with a punch, you could have two frames of a prepared sprung arm, one of a half-extended arm, three of a fully-extended punch, one of a half-extended arm, then back to a normal stance. this looks smoother as it is more like the real timing of things.

8: bounce anything that's hit. in this way, splashes are more difficult than they seem. quite a lot of bounce is needed for not very much visual effect.

9: if you need something to be really impactful, spend a lot of frames just before the impact, and just one frame on the impact itself. once the ground is impacted, the very next frame should be very different in limb positions, but basically the same in overall positions. an example of this is my chokeslam.

10: be mindful of normal extension limits. if a shoulder can't move that way, then don't make it. if a foot is resistant to moving that way, then make it resist such movement. the only exception, with stick figures, is when you want to make them turn around or face towards or away from the camera. since they are 2D, this is achieved visually by switching the orientation of arm/elbow or leg/knee. but unless the character is turning in this way, or getting a knee blown out by a huge strike or something, this shouldn't happen.

11: the very last tip is that the more time you spend on it, whether that means making more frames or spending longer on each frame, the better it will look.
