In the first Edition of the
newly revamped Weekly Featured Wrestler, we're here to discuss the man Mike Adamle once boasted was "Jamaican Me Crazy Kofi"... Kofi Kingston. Since debuting in WWE on their third brand, ECW, Kofi has quickly soared up their popularity ladder and became a household favorite amongst fans. But there's always an ugly side to things. Despite what looks like an impressive resume with three separate Intercontinental and two United States Championship reigns, not to mention winning Tag Team gold on three separate occasions with three separate partners, including the always controversial and current WWE Champion CM Punk, Kofi is considered by many to be "boring" both inside and outside of the ring.
Each of those singles title reigns are unmemorable. In 2009 I specifically recall how majority of us here wanted him to lose the United States Championship so badly to either Jack Swagger or The Miz, and in shocking horror, witnessed him retain at PPV after PPV, until finally he lost to The Miz on a RAW in October 2009. Kofi Kingston suffers from lack of charisma on the microphone as well as never having an interesting feud. In an ironic turn of events, fans that were once clamoring for him to drop the title for his utter boringness, were quickly marking out for him when he started what is his closest interesting feud to date, that being at the end of 2009 when he destroyed Randy Orton's custom car. Fans caught a glimpse of edge and attitude with Kofi that quickly made them forget how boring he can be.
After having a short feud with Orton, he was quickly buried and fell back down into the mid-card scene, where he's been ever since. His entire WWE career he's just sort of floated in the locker room, partnering up with a random pairing to put his blip back on the radar, most recently a successful partnership with Evan Bourne, before that dope botched their push by failing not once but twice with back to back wellness policy violations. But Kofi bounced back and teamed up with the oddly hilarious R-Truth who was coming off a successful heel run. After carrying the Tag Team gold for months, and just sort of taking up space, they dropped the titles to the amazingly new duo, Team Hell No, who have single handedly rejuvenated the tag team division. With one last hoorah effort, Kofi and Truth competed in a tag team tournament to become the new number one contender to Team Hell No's Tag Team Championship at Hell In A Cell, but they lost, and with that losing effort,
in a WWE.com Exclusive, they've officially broken up as a team. The travesty behind this is while not capturing their chemistry on screen during RAW, these two were hilarious to watch together during WWE.com's Exclusive videos and Backstage Fallout segments, media which majority of "fans" have chosen to ignore.
Which leads me to three things:
- What becomes of Kofi Kingston now? It appears he's going right back into the IC title scene by taking on current Intercontinental Champion, The Miz. A feud which we've seen before, which wasn't exciting in the slightest. Perhaps WWE have found a way to make it work with Kofi? We know Miz has the chops to keep himself relevant, but will Kofi be able to keep up, or drag the feud, and title, down once again?
- How long before Kofi is tossed another tag team partner to stay relevant, and who will that person be since it's never the same person twice?
- What are your overall thoughts on this man?
