wwe events WWE PPV Thread 2008 (Pt. 1) [ Royal Rumble: January 27, 2008 ]

So does the Big Show who called his Big Show name his "slave name," and yet he's coming back. Plus RVD showed up a month ago anyway. I don't think RVD will be back at the RR (though I'd mark out if he did), but if he does indeed return to wrestling, it'll likely be for WWE.

I read that earlier in the week, but they normally are 90 second intervals to begin with. They've had 60 second ones a few times before, and they may have had 2 minute ones in early RR's, but most of the time it's 90 seconds.

I just checked the records from early 2000 from that RR and WM; no wonder I didn't remember, this was during Mike Awesome's time as leaving ECW with the title, then coming back to get creamed by Taz, and the Impact Players dominating over Raven and whomever Raven was teaming with to try and get the titles back (first Dreamer, then Awesome, then Whipwreck even). Ahhh, good times. I wasn't paying much attention to WWF in early 2000 due to ECW Oh yeah I nearly forgot this was when RVD's TV Title reign ended due to injury, Kash tried to pick up the slack but Tajiri kicked his f'n head in, and Rhino just beat the shit out of EVERYONE near the TV Title. Ahhhhhh, good times indeed! God bless old school ECW.

First off, as a long time RoH fan, I really don't like seeing shit like "If Cena faced Danielson/McGuinness, he would lose/look bad..." whatever. It makes RoH fans look bad. It's two separate feds, it's two separate styles. I stopped watching SD and WWECW outright and I only got back into RAW to see what Jericho's return would be like. There's not one second of RAW that I think to myself: "Wow, Delirious can wrestle circles around these guys," because I don't watch something that'll only piss me off whenever I see it. Stop watching WWE outright, they won't change for you, they won't miraculously change their sports entertainment into pure wrestling. It's unnecessary to stress yourself out over pro wrestling so much, and unhealthy. If I want to see good in-ring wrestling, good continuity, mostly good and mature storylines, and wrestling treated as a sport with the world title being the most important thing in the fed and not used as a prop, I go to Ring of Honor. I don't expect WWE to be my "cup of tea," nor am I going to take every chance I get to shove RoH down WWE fans throats around here. It's best to stop watching WWE; Cena is and will likely be for the rest of his career, WWE's top draw and main eventer. He's the new-age Hogan.

Secondly, though I'm also not a Cena fan, I shouldn't be the only one around here who is much happier to see him going back for the title than HHH, who was constantly bitched about as well. We all have our favorites, a good number of you like Punk and were solidly behind him. I don't think I root for anyone near the main event in WWE right now, so I'm not too pissed that my favorite guys (like Finlay and You-Manga) didn't win. I'm just pleased HHH, who could have definitely influenced the McMahons to be back around the title picture, is taking a backseat to someone who is not a backstage politician and comes off as a decent guy in real life. Again, if you can't stand this stuff, just stop watching once and for all, they won't cater to us RoH fans and they don't have to.

Lastly, more regarding Cena, we were actually SURPRISED about something. It seemed like many of us were only picking HHH, HBK, Batista, and Undertaker as chances to win, and in the past week CM Punk as well. Who of us called Cena? We read shit that he'll be out for awhile - hell, I mentioned a week ago that WWE just planned on Cena having a small role at WM24 - but it's gotten to the point where the news and rumors on wrestling websites are now wrong rather often. You know, as a wrestling fan, it's good to not know what's going to happen in the future because you have a reason to keep watching to see what's in store. While reading the recap of the RR match, as soon as I saw HHH enter at #29 I thought to myself: "Well, it's official, Big Show returns at #30. Who else would it be?" Well holy crap, I sure as hell didn't think it would be John Cena. I read the fans turned on him later in the match as well, but damn, I actually want to see this match just to see the reactions of everyone. It's great when WWE pleasantly surprises the fans, even if that pleasant surprise isn't exactly liked by the internet community.

My final four prediction (HBK, Undertaker, HHH, and Punk) nearly completely whiffed with only HHH making it If RAW turns into the same old crap with Cena all of the time, and I can't find other reasons to watch RAW, then I'll just stop. Final Countdown isn't going to hit and Danielson won't walk down the long entrance ramp with an epic Titantron entrance, with the 200 people in the WWE crowd that actually knows who he is singing along with the music, just to out-wrestle John Cena. Now RVD on the other hand...

First off, Mysterio is nowhere near in the same boat as John Cena. Cena has dominated WWE programming and world titles in the past several years. Mysterio had one reign where he was made to look like a bitch to near most everyone. New York fans are a bit different than most WWE crowds and come off as more smarky, or whatever term you want to use. Mysterio wasn't strongly booked in the lead up to the match like Jeff Hardy was against Orton, people didn't give him a chance to beat Edge, and Mysterio's fan base are mostly young kids and maybe some old school ECW/WCW fans or just casual fans who root for babyfaces. Edge is a cool heel, so mature and hardcore wrestling fans (like you'll find in NYC) generally go for such guys.

Secondly, Haz does have a point. [Haz? Right? He must be drugging out on those smart mushrooms again.] I would have been pissed if HHH won. However I would not have come here to whine about it. Only reason I made such a post following the RR was after seeing the RoH fan reaction and the comparisons, which I didn't believe had a place with Cena winning since they're two totally different feds. If HHH won I likely wouldn't have said anything at all, I would have been disappointed but not surprised, and it would have done more for me to stop watching RAW again because I'd be sure Jericho wouldn't be back after the title again. Now that Cena is back in the picture, I still have faith in them properly turning Jericho heel in 2008 and then him picking up his old feud with Cena. Though my faith in WWE is often misplaced

I've been watching the RR tonight and starting the RR match itself now. I've been trained to think that whenever Buffer does a huge wrestling intro, the nWo music is going to hit. I kind of wish it did, it would have been hilarious to see Hollywood Hulk Hogan come out first

Is Funaki still doing any sort of announcing? I haven't watched Smackdown much at all since the Eddie Guerrero tribute show.
