re: Asian "Quirks"

My mom had a story kind of like that, she was shopping for clothes and she saw this other woman that looked filipino, so she started talking to her, and the person kept smiling and nodding, turns out the person wasn't filipino and my mom was so embarassed, i was laughing tho

re: Asian "Quirks"

This thread looks more like an "Asian Trademarks" thread to me.

Anyways, One "quirk" i can give you is the Filipinos' infamous "Filipino Time". This means that filipinos are always late for something! In other words, they are not punctual!

To me, or at my place if you call someone older than you just by their name, it gonna sound really really rude, you feel like you should just stand there and wait for them to slap you, real hard lol. I never tried it before though. I call everyone older than me uncle or aunt.

re: Asian "Quirks"

Its because when you call people who are older than you by their names, its kinda like you are disrespecting them. Calling older people by their names is a lack of respect to that person.

re: Asian "Quirks"

I don't call everyone uncle or aunt, only if they are friends of my mum or dad or the whole family. Generally if they are Pakistani's really. That sounds racist but it isn't. If there young though, say early twenties or younger, they don't get nothing off me. Just their normal name.

I think a lot of other Asians (particularly when they're older) talk really loud amongst themselves. I certainly notice them when I'm on the bus. I guess they just aren't as sensitive to this sort of thing, and I suppose practically speaking they don't really have a reason to in the first place.

It's probably embarrassing to fellow Asians of the younger generation though, since we can more or less understand what they're talking/gossiping/rambling on about.

re: Asian "Quirks"

Off course, that is a longtime filipino tradition.
Other Filipino quirk is the act of blessing or holding an older person's hand and pressing it on your forehead. I can't describe it clearly but Filipinos know what i mean.

hehe I still do that too! it's so weird because there's like this pile of filipinos crowding in the middle of the church at the end of a mass and jsut giving out blessings. I think the "other" people thinks that we are weird but meh I still do it.

Yeah, I do it too after mass when im with my Parents. Here in the Philippines, Older people expect the youth to "bless" on them when necessary.

re: Asian "Quirks"

Is it just my parents or is it simply that Asians who grew up in the "previous generation" (to become this generation's adults) have the craziest, most illogical suspicions when... uh, they're suspicious about the details of something?

For example, me and my dad are living in the basement another Asian family rented out to us. My mother earlier dropped by with some dishwashing detergent. Next week she drops by again and notices that some of the detergent is now gone. She then asks me if the family upstairs has been secretly breaking into our house and running off with our detergent while we're not looking. I thought she was joking. She wasn't. Now call me crazy but if someone were able to gain access to your house behind your back, I think dishwashing detergent would be the last thing you should be worried about!

Another time my brother was on vacation in China. He didn't really give my dad a firm indication of when he'd be back so my dad only had a rough idea of how long he'd be there with his friends. As the general timeframe for my brother's return neared with no real contact with him, my dad began to fear that my bro was not in China at all but being used as a "mule" in an international drug-smuggling operation.

I have crazy parents.

re: Asian "Quirks"

Don't worry it's not just you, my friend's parents are exactly like that, they make-up these crazy things in their head and actually expect you to believe it (or something like that). My auntie is like that too but that doesn't really matter since my parents aren't as crazy. BTW thnx |_Neo_|
