Can't get starcraft to work online!

Alright, I've been having this weird problem with getting brood war to work online. Everytime I try to get on, it tells me that b-net cannot detect my games version and that I either have a virus or to reinstall. I've tried to re-install countless times, I've also tried patching it countless times - I've tried to patch it through brood-war itself where it automatically updates itself, and I've tried doing it via downloading the patch online and installing - still same error message.

After searching online trying to find a solution, the closest thing I came to was someone saying how if you've done a complete re-format of your computer, that's when the problem can occur. They said that it was a problem with starcraft not properly being able to work with the graphics card, so it just gave the error "You may have a virus" instead of explaning why it won't work..

Now there is ONE way I can get online to work. I have to boot the computer up in safe mode and then run-starcraft and it works perfectly fine! Problem is there is no sound, and no way that I know of to enable sound while in safe-mode! Does anyone know what that means? Why would it work in safe mode but not normally? I'm really hoping I can find a solution to this, been playing starcraft for years and I really want to be able to play online again. And playing without sound, I just can't do it haha!

This is seriously a weird problem, never came across it myself or even heard of it before.

I don't know about that. Installing SC is one of the first things I do whenever I reformat (probably more than a dozen times, with 3 different comps) and everything works fine.


You can try downloading v1.16.1 from the Blizzard site and boot the game through the No-CD method.


Or register your CD-Key at the Blizzard store and download the digital copy for free, and try running that. Because it sounds like a problem with your disc.

Well, your problem has definitely got me stumped.

Try connecting to the iCCup server. It may work because iCCup is a third-party server with no connection to Blizzard. If you can't connect to that then something is seriously messed up. And honestly, if you can play iCCup, there's no point in playing on the regular Bnet servers.

That's good to hear, though I've never heard of any other person having the need to de-frag just to get the game working.

Yes, it's 3 months and I believe +extra time if you have more games played. My account was inactive for well over half a year but it still worked, because it had over 900 games.

Uninstall starcraft, defrag your computer then reinstall starcraft and come back with your results.

Have same problem but i run it with "Run As Administrator" and it works!

Not enough space on Starcraft's host partition is also a cause for the respective error response from BNet.
