Was he a demon that possessed Saike, or was he a mutated Saike?

Yoshi I think he is the first And second thing you said. That makes the most sense logically. As it showed he mutated in some was, but I believe it created some outside entity on it's own that then possed him. As in the end he lives. So a moxture tbh

He was all of the collective evil energy from the cleansing tanks. He took on a physical form by possessing the ogre. Possessions in most fictional cases do mutate/morph the one possessed, if even a tad.

I doubt that. Janemba is the result of the evil energy tanks overloading, exploding and possessing the ogre that was supposed to attend to the machines. The evil energy stored in those tanks was simply the sum of all evil spirits that were to be cleansed and reincarnated into a new life form. It was just energy, no DNA, genetic matter or whatever...

But he did form with a person. And a person has DNA. So there must have been some sort of DNA fusion somehow.

I prefer him being classified as a "douche" demon (:-p little modding on NamekGirl's explanation). Hated that stupid movie too. Don't know why everyone seems to like him so much.

I dunno, the ogre that made up the base of Janemba was actually a demon, or more specifically, an Oni. That's not the same as a human being, and I have no idea whether demons have DNA like humans do, lol. But in any event, my point was that the evil energy possessing the ogre was just energy, and no DNA, since all this energy is basically just cleansed spirits of life forms that were stripped of their bodies, spirits that were to be reincarnated into new life forms after the cleansing process was finished.
