Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z? |
|
Which do you guys prefer? I love dragon ball because it had a lot of fights and storyline. I love dbz for all it fights which were epic...
I personally liked dragon ball more. Everyone seemed to worked harder on getting stronger and seemed to be less plot holes than dbz XD IMO tho... ------------------- ![]() Oldies only Revive legend of the dragoon forum!☼_☼

I'd like to consider every single, expect GT, dragonball episode as one whole story. But if we separate them I'd say Dragonball is my favorite. Both of them have their ups and downs, but I enjoyed the more tuned fights and the humor in it. Bad things were sometimes too childish moments and very long and boring sagas.
Then again DBZ had the most pleasing story, starting from the arrival of Raditz and ending with Friezas destruction. I loved Piccolo and Vegeta as characters and Frieza and his goons were nice villains. The first Super Saiyan transformation was emotional and epic, too bad i saw Vegeta's ssj transformation and Gohan's ssj2 transformation before that, so it didn't have the same effect on me Cell arc was again about everyone getting stronger, mostly the saiyans which sucks, but you could watch it without too much agony and Cell wasn't that bad of an villain. Gohan's japanese transformation is the best in the whole series, the raw emotional outburst really made the chills crawl up my spine. Goku's permanent death would have been more fitting, but everyone have their own taste. Buu arc felt too long, and mostly it was about stronger and stronger characters appearing all the time. SSJ3 felt unnecessary, even though the scene itself was rather epic, and so did most of the other ones. I stopped caring about what powerlevel each one have after seeing that someone with a powerlevel about 20000 can destroy a planet. So there's someone with a powerlevel of billiongazillionpavilion... so? He can destroy a planet much easier than someone else... AT should have focused a little bit more to something else than powering everyone all the time. Maybe not putting those powerlevel scouters and not revealing powerlevels would have been the best solution? So pros and cons in my opinion: DB + Fights more skill/technique based and powerlevels kept in somewhat more decent level + Piccolo vs Goku, Goku vs Tien, Jackie Chun vs Tien etc were the most epic fights in the whole series + Humor + Interesting story, excluding Red Ribbon one + Great cast of characters... - ... though I could manage without Puar and folks - Some parts of Red Ribbon arc was boring as hell DBZ + A lot of great fights + Vegeta and Piccolo as characters and their change to a different persons + Saiyan/Frieza story the best in the series + Some very emotional and epic scenes/transformations, especially Goku's ssj and Gohan's ssj2 ones + Even though Goku is rather one-dimensional person, you just have to love him - Buu arc could have been different/shorter - Super saiyan transformation lost it's appeal very fast - Too many/big powerups and mainly only for the saiyans - The dragonballs restoring everything all the time, those things are too much hax in the series - Humor, even though there's some, it lacks when I compare it to the original series

TBH after recently finishing DB. I'd go with DB. Everyone had a fair chance at being the best. The fights were just better and it had a better mix of humor and seriousness. Especially with piccolo.
Goku in Z annoyed the living hell out of me. The insane jumps in power were just annoying. And the Buu arc sucked. Unessary and rathers plot hole-ish ------------------- ![]()

DB for sure.... I love DBZ as well, but I like DB a tad bit more... The reason for that is the fights were more skilled, more technical, more precise close physical combat.... Not just barrage after barrage of ki blasts and super speed and blurry "sloppy" fighting. I know they had skill in their fights in DBZ as well, I am just speaking visually.
Like I always say, my favorite fight in all of DB, and that includes Z and GT and all the movies, was Jacki Chun VS. Tien.... I loved how skilled and technical the fight was. All the hard physical blows and mental tricks. The most awesome fight ever IMO... Darkking - If you like DB so much, you should vote in my rate the arc threads while we are still on DB.... Unless you just aren't interested, if so, then nevermind... LOL Zangetsu - so can I trust you will vote in the next threads? ------------------- ![]() Pittsburgh Steelers: 6-3 Houston Texans: 5-4 Do you wanna Cosby Sweater?

Dragonball Z definitely, the main I liked is that almost every character had some time in the "spotlight". Dragonball, eventhough the fights were arguably better as they weren't initially all about who could launch the biggest ki blasts, but I feel it's too Goku centered. I see you didn't include GT in the topic title, good thing, I wouldn't have even considered preferring it over DB or DBZ in the first place, so...

Of course DB was more Goku centered, the series was only centered around Goku...
The others were a supporting cast... He is the main character afterall, and it showed him grow up.... Z had a lil more room to give the others the spotlight from time to time seeing as how Goku was already grown up and had the spotlight in all of DB pretty much... Atleast DB being more Goku focused is better and makes more sense than GT being all Goku focused... Not that I am trying to argue your opinion, GOGETA, just saying.... DB couldn't really help but make Goku the spotlight character as the whole concept of the series revolved around him even more so than Z did. But even Z focused on him more often than the other characters. ------------------- ![]() Pittsburgh Steelers: 6-3 Houston Texans: 5-4 Do you wanna Cosby Sweater?

I bought Dragonball season 1 about a week ago for my birthday and I was surprised at how good it actually was, It was more adventure than fighting, I liked the fact that there wasnt alot of fights because thats all DBZ is, fighting for the sack of fighting
Still DBZ has a higher appeal, more power and more epicness I guess, I already have all the movies and most of the seasons of dbz Dragonball GT is good BUT I hate season 1, which is the season I bought thinking it would be the better but noo. the last episode of the season is where you fianlly see goku starting to take on the ssj4 form gaah I thought season 1 would be goku defeating baby, god...also GT is kinda simple compared to DBZ, dunno if thats really a bad thing though ------------------- ![]()

Although I haven't seen a whole lot of the original Dragonball, I'm relatively caught up on its history and I can say for a fact that it has a better plot than Z. Z is all about one fight after another with hours of powering up that last almost as long as the fights themselves.
And yet, there's still something about Z that captivates me. It's cheesy, nonsensical and at times downright stupid, but that's what I love about it. It doesn't take itself seriously and features a cast of memorable characters that while a bit cliche, are likable nonetheless.

To me it is a natural progression. Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z are one in the same in the manga and that's how I see them actually. But if I had to pick one, it would be Z. Dragon Ball is great, don't get me wrong, but it is more grounded. While Dragon Ball is not realistic, it has a more realistic martial arts sense to it and it's about tournaments and whatnot. DBZ is epic. The stakes are much larger, the characters are more developed, there are new characters. The story takes an epic twist and there are so many layers of the story. Goku's background, Saiyan race, their connection with Frieza, etc. And plus, it's nice to see where those Dragon Ball characters would end up. Which, in large part, is why I can tolerate GT.

One thing that really gets me about DBZ is post Frieza saga. Everything plot-wise just starts falling apart. The Frieza battle was arguably the most epic fight in the series and also carried some real weight and closure. Cell kinda comes out of nowhere and Buu is even worse (at least Cell had connections to the RR Army). While I do actually like some of the characters and fight scenes from the later sagas, I can't say they have very good, emotional plots.
Seeing just about everyone except Goku and Gohan die by the hands of Nappa and Frieza actually had some meaning. The Super Saiyan legend had meaning. Later on, death meant nothing. You just go to King Kai's and crack jokes while waiting to be brought back to life by the Dragon Balls for the fifth time. The Super Saiyan legend meant nothing. Only one legendary Saiyan born a thousand years and the Saiyan's are nearly extinct? Yeah right. There's more than seven Saiyans in the series and five of them not only go Super Saiyan -- they also surpass it -- by multiple levels. And Frieza the most powerful being in the universe? Nah, eventually, man-made robots and random blobs make the scourge of the universe look like a wimp. The sense of scale and power is lost with all these Super Saiyans and when the lowest of the new villains can destroy the galaxy with their pinky.
