I know this is an old thread, so sorry to resurrect it, but I still feel that I should express my views. Plus, the creator of this thread has never had his/her request carried out, so it is up to me to act. Ahem. First of all, I should say that I have played every single Final Fantasy game, AND every single Legend of Zelda game, so yes, I am one of the very, VERY small percentage here that could actually make a legitimate opinion, instead of some biased one. Seriously, all the people who vouch for FF have only played one or two LoZ game, and those who have vouched for the LoZ games have never played too many FF games. So, yes, I have played all the games, and here is my final decision.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I love Final Fantasy and everything Square has to offer. The characters are deep, and the storylines are always interesting, and, well, you just can’t hate a game that has chocobos in it.
HOWEVER!
The Legend of Zelda is, without a doubt, the best game in the history of, well, games. There are multiple reasons why, and I shall relate them in a list.
1) All right. Where to start? Well, let’s start with characters. The characters of Final Fantasy are deep, yes, but they are often repetitive, and not done so with purpose. Lightning just reminds me of a female Cloud with a dash of Squall mixed in there. They’re all emotionally scarred and, let’s face it, emo. Zelda, however, has colorful, memorable characters. And, even though Link and Zelda reappear in almost every single game (I say “almost” because Zelda did not appear in Link’s Awakening) they’re completely different characters each time. The Link from Twilight Princess is mature, humble, and adamant. Link from Wind Waker is young, goofy, and at times hot-headed. Zelda in Skyward Sword is friendly, playful, and yet dutiful. Zelda in Minish Cap is hyperactive and talkative. And we players can keep track of that. We love each incarnation separately. And not only are the main characters memorable, but so are the supporting characters. Navi will always remain in our hearts (and, in some of us, our heads XD) as the annoying faerie who guides us along. Malon is the farm girl who gave Link Epona for the first time. Malo is the demon worshipping man baby (well, in my opinion, anyway). We remember and cherish these characters.
2) Music. That’s one of the things Zelda is famous for, isn’t it? Its music. Sure, Final Fantasy music is great, but no matter what, it doesn’t hold a candle to LoZ music. The music of Zelda is so beautiful and breathtaking, and it really plays a part in the game itself. Hell, when Zelda’s Lullaby starts playing, we all know something’s going to happen. We all know the Overworld theme. We could all play Song of Storms on any given instrument if we wished. And the creators go out of their way to make the melodies unique in each game. For example, in Twilight Princess, Zelda’s Lullaby had a darker undertone. It matched the tone of the game. In Minish Cap, it had a lighter tone to it, more whimsical, and, in a way, colorful. Zelda music is so amazing that right now, there is an orchestra on tour this year that is playing nothing but Zelda music. Have they done that for Final Fantasy? Nope.
3) The real-time game play is much easier to control. Yes, in-turn gameplay enhances strategy, but real-time actually increases hand-eye coordination. Also, you’re pretty limited with what you can do in Final fantasy. You have one attack and that’s it. Link has many, many weapons he can use. Also, in order to move forward in Final Fantasy, it doesn’t take much thinking. You just move forward. However, in Zelda, you have to think and solve puzzles in order to make progress. This enhances your thinking skills.
4) Zelda has the nostalgia factor. People (myself included) openly wept when they saw the trailer for the remake of Ocarina of Time. People find themselves humming the opening theme from Wind Waker. They smile when they hear the words, “It’s a secret to everybody.” They cringe when they hear the words “Water” and “Temple” in the same sentence. Yes, the sentence, “I hit my head, so I’m going to hold my cold water bottle up to my temple to ease the swelling.” makes people groan. For a lot of us, Ganondorf was our imaginary villain growing up.
5) Lastly, Link is just a boss. I’m sorry, but he can kick the ass of Cloud, Squall, Cecil, Terra, Tidus, and whoever else you wish to throw at him. He can do ANYTHING. And, did you know that he made a cameo in the first Final Fantasy? There’s a gravestone in Elfheim that reads, Here lies Link. Not a single other gravestone is marked. Also, the residents of Elfheim even look like Link. This only means that Link is so cool, they decided to put him in their game.
Now, I think I’ve said enough, don’t you?
