Next to Cait Sith from FFVII (who also did random physical damage), Quina is my least favorite character in the FF series. Though Edward the Bard is pretty annoying.

It's like the game designers were tripping on LSD when they came up with the Gourmand race, it's so weird. What's with the unknown gender issue? I know the race seems to go apecrap for frogs and frogs are known to spontaneously change genders, maybe over the years of eating he-she frogs, the Gourmands evolved into some sort of vague...thing.

And random damage is utterly ridiculous, what's the story behind that?! Not to mention the insane 250 AP needed to learn High Tide.

I always make a point to use Quina whenever I start a new game, then when I do, I stuff him/her in a dark place and forget about them.

It wasn't as extreme as Quina, but it wasn't consistent enough, either. Of course, I could be wrong. 0_0

I don't believe that Caitsith did random damage. It did however sport Limit Breaks that were quite unpredictable (Slots anyone?).

I never used Caitsith and I never really much used Quina. Both characters just seem quite laughable not only in appearance, but also their stats and contribution to the overall plot of the story.

Quina could have been left out of the storyline entirely and it wouldn't have made that much of a difference.

And I believe recruiting it is optional, up until the point where you need it to break through that barrier that goes into one of the transcontinental tunnels.
