Animal Farm (George Orwell) |
|
I had to read this book for English class, and it seems interesting enough. It's about this farm that gets taken over by animals with the pigs in charge. slowly, the brutal pigs begins to act like humans... and this is suppose to relate to Russian history.

It might, I'm not sure exactly. But as the pigs start to develop human traits throughout the book, they start to act alot like high people in Russian Heirachy, and also the point that they have a Russina accent. So it most likely does refer to the russians in that aspect.

Russian Accent? How can you pick up an accent from a book? They language used was pretty normal to me.
Animal farm is an okay pook if you are looking for a satryical view on the russian revoluation. I found it kinda funny, "four legs good, two legs bad". But if you veiw it in retrospect, its kinda brutual. They overthrow one ruler only to place their own rulers in power which turn out to be far more brutual than the old ruler ever could dream of being. Orwell was trying to make people understand how the russian revolution happened. And well, evidently his goal worked since all American high school students are forced to read it. ------------------- "Devotion to the truth is the hallmark of morality; there is no greater, nobler, more heroic form of devotion than the act of a man who assumes the responsibility of thinking."

Well, it is pointed at the Russian Revolution - but more towards communism. Orwell loathed the outcome of communism, and did not agree with it's practice.
The characters in the book are all archetypical representations of specific "citizens" of the Soviet State. As you watch the breakdown of the ideals, and the more the animals suffer under their animal "brothers," you can also draw into comparisons of the human condition. ------------------- quote KngAlaric

There was certain words in the book that could be conceived as a Russian Accent, and also are you forgetting the movie?

There were a few different movies made one this. One was a terrible animated on where it is pretty much a musical, the other is not so bad. And really there are no accents other that the pigs snorting every once in a while.

Yeah there are indications that Orwell is referring to Russian politics. He doesn't have the pigs speak with a Russian accent, but the use of the word 'comrad' seems to indicate that the pigs are fashioned after Russian communists.

To quote myself,
It is hard to believe that this thread has not received a reply in three years. To those wondering: Yes, Animal Farm ridicules Soviet totalitarianism, and there are many allusions to famous leaders and events.

Metafor's right.
I studied this in school, but I'v also read it for myself a few times. I know this is a little more lighthearted than the rest of the thread, but how many people have tried singing that song about animals, to the tunes of both Clementine and La Cucaracha in turn? ![]() -------------------

Just to be clear, which part did you agree with?
I have yet to sing "Beasts of England" to the tune of "Clementine" or "La Cucaracha," but I tend to sing it with a strained English accent (a bad one, I might add). XD

I read this book in 6th grade. I really enjoyed the creative spin he put on the rise of communism in Russia. Weather you are looking at it as a more lighthearted story or truly think of how it connects to the brutal Russain government, it is a very good book.
I really liked the book. The live action movie was pretty good as well. ------------------- ![]()

quote metaforIt's not a matter of agreement; I said you were right about Animal Farm's relationship to Soviat Tolatarianism. I should go dig out my copy; I've got a collected works of George Orwell paperback, with 1984 and Animal Farm in it, as well as a few others. ![]() -------------------
