Stephen Kings book 'On Writing' takes an unstructured approach to craft. He recommends beginning with an idea, creating characters, and letting them pull things along. Plot, he says, is a crutch or, at best, a heavy tool that may destroy if not carefully applied.
King's position is that a great writer is something that cannot be created and that bad writers can't be helped, the only opinion of his seen within the book that I strongly disagree with, since I feel that both can be shaped and improved respectively given time, experience, and determination.
The last section, detailing King's near-fatal run-in with a car, was moving and developed King as a character in much the same way he develops his characters in a novel.
'On Writing' may not change your life (but then again, who knows?), but it is an interesting take on writing, providing permission to write the way you want, and to me, that's the biggest motivational drive to succeed as a writer.
