When reading this book you are in a different world and you can picture the story in your head. you can't put the book down from the moment you start reading this book. You said absolutely nothing that I would not have attributed, perhaps even more, to the LotR series. They are long reads, sure, but they are indepth and interesting, with worlds entirely different from the simple "Magical" one which is in Harry Potter. The enemies seem unrealistic in Harry Potter, while, and forgive me for the oxymoron in the following sentence, the combat described in the LotR series seems so much more real. Besides, Rowling's languages are only random hissings or gruntings. Tolkein actually wrote an alphabet and such for his characters, complete with a supposedly workable dictionary of words. -------------------

	I like the Harry Potter books better but I can see Lord of the Rings took much more planning out and is more detailed. I have them on my bookshelf, i just never got around to reading them. I think of Lord of the Rings as an actual classic read, something that would take time and is a great contribution to literature. I see the Harry Potter series as a one time thing. Popular now, not too popular later. Lord of the Rings will probably always be huge in the Science Fiction world - regarded as a great piece of literature. TLA was right though, I haven't read The Lord of the Rings so I don't have much room to talk eh? The LOTR movies were awesome, even though i've heard there nothing compared to the books. ( That's why i bought the books, but school started, and.. well. Bah. =( ) Hopefully I can start to read them again. I'm currently caught up in Memoirs and history biographies. hah

	I just read the first 5 pages of this thread and laughed harder than I have in a long long time. The fact that I often find myself beating my head against a wall in a "debate" with some fool made reading such a one sided verbal beat down unbelievably enjoyable. 	_{Yes, and the creatures in Harry Potter are no where near as good as Lord of the Rings. The best thing in Harry Potter are the Death Eaters, and those aren't even that great. While the Lord of the Rings have Barrow-Wights, Ringwraiths etc.}

	Wow, those first 5 pages are really something...some of that stuff is just unbelievable, like the guy who said HP was better because there were 7 HP books, and LOTR was only 3 books! 	I enjoy reading a very wide variety of books, including both LotR and Harry Potter. I enjoyed them both tremendously, but to actually say that HP is better than LotR? That seems to me as ludicrous as saying that Twilight is better than 'Salem's Lot or Dracula. And I really hope that my saying that doesn't completely derail this thread.

Lord of the Rings is a very masterfully written series, or least the first and only one hundred pages I read into the first book. However, while reading his book, I just couldn't stay interested in reading on. His writing doesn't connect to me like JK does. JK's Harry Potter series has had me in tears laughing, and the plots just really drive a stake into my mind. They are fun books, and I grew up with them. I had so many memories reading them, and that's pretty much why I prefer them over any other books. Perhaps the same thing could have happened if I started with Lord of the Rings, or maybe not--who knows. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Tolkien is a crappy author, because he definitely is not, but his books just don't deliver like Harry Potter has delivered for me. I thought the movies were pretty cool, but that's because they were cinematic productions, not a book, and that's just beside my point. _{I think you were uninterested because you don't have enough patience to make it to the good parts towards the second half.}
