Fantastic so far. Not quite at aSoS level just yet, but not far from it.
Couple of the chapters have just felt like history lessons or tourism guides, but that is more an observation than a criticism because I love hearing more about GRRM's world.
The Jon and Davos chapters are just epic... ...I FREAKING LOVE THE NORTH!
Spoiler:Big spoiler (page 232 onwards)
Young Griff. Wow. Mega game changer. Unsure if I believe who he thinks he is...
re: A Song of Ice and Fire series (George R. R. Martin)
Finished!
Amazing read. Have never read any series that is quite as engrossing and detailed as the world GRRM has created.
My only request, mentioned by Existence, would be for somebody to kindly nuke the Free Cities, including all the POV characters that are chilling over there, just so that we can concentrate on Westeros!
IMO, Jon's arch finished on the perfect note. Amazing cliffhanger.
The archs for Cersie, Jamie and Arya were fine. Their very inclusion in the book was a bonus, and we could easily have waited till Winds of Winter, so no real complaints.
GRRM confirmed on his blog that he intended to end the book by showing us two major battles, which he named "the ice battle" and the "fire battle".
Supposedly, though unconfirmed, these would have been the off-screen Battle of Winterfell and the conclusion to the Siege of Meereen.
Seeing these would have given the book a terrific ending. It would also have finalised the archs for Theon, Asha, Barristan, Tyrion, Victarion and Dany.
The book was also supposed to include a chapter from Arianne Martel explaining that Aegon captured Storm's End. This would have ended his arch on a high note too.
All of these cut scenes will instead by included in Winds of Winter, so we are not missing out.
I would say that any problems that people have with DWD are not the fault of GRRM's writing, but rather the editing. If the Editor had asked GRRM to cut more of Tyrion's boring wanderings in favour of giving us a proper conclusion, we would have a much more rounded story.
The editing process was rushed in order to get the book out quicker, because of the fans complaining about the wait. All swings and roundabouts tbh.
Actually, now I think about it, Dany's arch ends amazingly too.
The book would have benefited from showing us the "fire battle", thus wrapping up the Meereen situation, but the point at which we leave Dany is fab tbh.
