I could do either myself. Ultimately though it'll depend on the books and games available. If I had my prefernces on the individual books it would definitely be books.

Well thanks for the tip and info. I hadn't heard of the thing before reading about it in this thread. I strongly suggest Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time to anyone who enjoys fantasy. If you like sci fi or fantasy check out anything by Roger Zelazny, you will not be disappointed.

re: ~Genereal Books & Literature Discussion 2~

It more than likely could. The thing is the various comic book character properties have a wide proliferation on neo due to having been developed into film, television, and video games. As it is one of the X-men movie threads in the the movies forum is about 90% dedicated to the comics and 10% dedicated to the movie series. This is just one example. The point is while there are multiple comics related threads in this forum there are also many comics related threads scattered throughout the rest of the board. Another example is the "Which Superhero Would Win?" thread in the television forum. I don't think it would wind up like the Gundam subforum which manages about 3 posts a day. A comics subforum could be quite popular because such a forum would naturally include comic books, graphic novels, manga, and newspaper strips. Well that's my two cents for what it's worth. Besides who would make the decision for this in the first place?

I think the bit with Marvel is just us treading a bit too carefully. I started a thread for the Valiant Comics Universe before the Marvel thread was unveiled, and Golden Miru Warrior showed up to post nothing more than his opinion that individual comic companies or series don't "need" their own threads.

Uh, not to sound stupid but what's an SP? Anywho I was thinking that the one who established a subforum was the moderator of the forum, or an I wrong? If this is the case we don't have a mod here in B&L. Why not? Gundam has one with a measly three posts a day, but B&L doesn't with four times that? Anyways I loves my comics. Yeah well at least the average post per day in this forum is climbing up. I just wonder if the slack in this forum is related to low numbers of people actually reading any books, or if it's instead people have said all they have to say about the books they read.

I think he thought you were meaning that a section mod is the moderator of the particular forum. Just a guess, and I'm probably wrong. Anyway I'm wondering if anyone could suggest some good fantasy authors to me. The ones that I regularly read are Tolkien, Moorcock, Jordan, and Zelazny.

Well I spend the bulk of my time on neo here and in the Gundam subforum (which has drastically declined in activity in the past month). Due to that I'm here more than anywhere else on neo. I'll be kind of scarce the next couple of days though 'cause I'll be painting a house over the weekend.

Well thanks for the votes of confidence; I really do appresiate it. Just got back from 10 hours of work painting that house, and I get to go back tomorrow. The novel Transformers: Hardwired came out on May 17th according to an employee at Borders. They didn't have their order of it in yet. So I still haven't gotten my paws on the blasted thing.

Clancy and Shakespeare? Comics are hardly literature? It depends on what definition of the word you use. Technically speaking literature is any printed media incorporating text. If you mean academic literature Clancy doesn't belong in the same sentence as Shakespeare. Shakespeare, Chaucer, Milton, Donne, etc. etc. etc. are your classic literary authors. Clancy (although I like him) is just a writer of popular fiction. Comics are part of popular culture. Logically Clancy and comics fit together more seamlessly than Clancy and Shakespeare.

Here's a list of other potential comic book threads. If there are any interest in some of these then by all means start discussing them.
Chaos Comics- publisher of Lady Death, Evil Ernie, Purgatori, and others.
WaRP Graphics- publisher of the massive Elfquest universe of comics.
Sirius- publisher of Poison Elves, Dawn, Crypt of Dawn, Artesia, and others.
Comico- publisher of Justice Machine, Elementals, and original publisher of Grendel and Mage among others.
First Comics- Publisher of Grimjack, Dynamo Joe, American Flagg!, Whisper, Starslayer, Jon Sable: Freelance, Sable (and related titles Bar Sinister, Shaman's Tears, and Maggie the Cat which were published by other companies) to name a few.
Alternate Realities in Comic Books- DC's Earths 1,2,3,S,X,Prime, and others. Marvel's What If? and Age of Apocalypse. DC's Elseworlds and any other alternate continuities.
Warren/Harris- two different publishers, Warren published series taken over by Harris. Some of these were Eerie, Creepy, Vampirella, Vengeance of Vampirella, Pantha among others.
Archie/MLJ- publisher of the various Archie and related series. Publisher's original name was MLJ and also published various superhero titles.
New England Comics- publisher of the various Tick comics and related spinoffs.
Aardvark-Anaheim- publisher of Cerebus which is perhaps the most famous and longest running of the independent comic book titles.

I would prefer a comics subforum myself. I think if someone signs the petition they ought to come over to the comics thread here and show they are serious about it. I don't often subscribe to that "If you build it; they will come" philosophy. I just noticed that the PPD is up to 50.pointsomethingorother, WHOO HOO!

I see what you mean. Part of the problem about not much discussion of books going on is there simply aren't enough people posting that are reading or have read the same books. It's kind of hard to discuss something if you haven't read it or have said all you have to say. It's also just a little bit difficult to carry on a discussion with oneself too.

Maybe the various threads need some better organization. I don't know something to denote what genre the discussed series is or something. Or maybe that isn't a very effective idea, I dunno.
Maybe people ought to just make a post in this thread telling what books or series of books they would like to discuss to help spark conversation. Then the appropriate thread could be located or started.

I'm surprized that you aren't wanting to advertise the Books and Literature forum with a banner with the Joker with one of those guns that has a flag come out saying Books and Literature Forum on it.
Or maybe just the word Literature puts people off?

Well you can always remove it later at some point if the inclination hits you. I'm totally disgusted. One of my favorite Transformers websites said that the novel Transformers: Hardwired novel has been released and is in stores. The problem is I've been checking bookstores for the past 3 weeks and still haven't found a store that had it or knew anything about it.

This is the first actual serious sci fi Transformers novel. It's the first part of a trilogy and supposedly the Autobots and Decepticons end up working together to fight off another race of aliens attempting to invade Earth. It could be the armies of the Liege Maximo or the Vok, but I really don't know. Anyway there were several of those choose your fate type Transformers storybooks in the '80s and many wonderful comics and graphic novels but no actual novel until now.

True, but does the subforum stats have an effect on Books and Literature Forum stats as a whole? Ny next question is is there any relevant topic that people want to talk about here that we aren't discussing at this exact moment?

Do you mean a published short story or write one of your own? Reading and discussing a particular short story wouldn't be a bad idea depending on the short story in question. The same could be done with poetry. Either way the content of said post would need to be checked for any kind of inappropriate content.
What is there here at this moment that really requires a super to need to clean up and organize anyway? There are a few more threads that should be moved into the comics subforum, but other than that the thread directories are kept up to date and very thorough.

How should the story idea be suggested? Should someone just post one, or it be put to a vote or what? Should later posted stories by the same author be kept in the same thread?

I know that would be very time consuming. I'm sure it would be worth the hassle but still time consuming. Maybe we could have people post what they think is the single best book and explain why. Then the first hundred different books could be a Top 100 of sorts that way?

Anyway, those are just a couple of series that are extremely popular currently so naturally more people would be discussing them.
I would rather be talking about the Wheel of Time series myself.

Yeah we are lucky that you messed up one of the links on your application. You've stuck with this forum through some pretty thin times and probably spend more time here than anyone else.
Has anyone here read any of Michael Moorcock's Corum series? I've read a very little of it and it's pretty confusing. I like his Elric series a whole lot more, but the crazy thing is that they are the same guy at different points in time and reality. They're different aspects of the "Eternal Champion".

There's been what, ten books or so in the Elric series? There is also the Tales of the White Wolf anthology which had several rather good Elric stories by other authors. The Dreamthief's Daughter was a dark episode in the saga even for Elric I think. Elric and another version of himself Ulrik from WWII era Germany both fail in their quests. Then worlds collide and Elric decides to show Hitler and the Third Reich what hell on Earth really is.
The Elric series is very dark in a rather extreme manner. I'm meaning dark as in completely and utterly devoid of hope, especially for Elric. I guess that is to be expected when one makes deals with demon gods and carries a vampiric sword.
Perhaps we need a thread for Elric, Moorcock, and his other series?
An interesting sidenote on Michael Moorcock: he has written lyrics for the band Blue Oyster Cult.

One thing I would like to see a bit more of in this forum is discussion of literary works by people such as William Butler Yeats, Robert Frost, Zora Neale Hurston, Mark Twain, Edmund Spenser, John Donne, James Joyce, Phillip Larkin, Christopher Marlowe, Ben Johnson, James Fenimore Cooper, Edgar Allan Poe, Alexandre Dumas, and other such authors whose works are deemed as literature.
Any takers?

H.G. Wells is another good one. I really liked Time Machine and Invisible Man. I brought up the topic because I got to looking through the threads and the Literature part as the academic types would consider it is grossly outweighed by popular genre fiction.
Comic Book shaped Marshmellow pieces huh? Where did that come from?
Anyway back to the topic at hand, or in this case keyboard, as far as literature goes I do believe there is a thread for Treasure Island.
The only problem is I read that one when I was in 8th grade, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea at about the same time.

LOL. So what's the milk? And do you add any sugar or fruit?
Anyway should this thread be used for a general literature discussing that we are meaning or would it get to disjointed?
I had a Renaissance Lit course this past semester and one of the books on the reading list that I really enjoyed in spite of myself was Sir Thomas More's Utopia. It's a commentary on what would be the perfect society. More, by the way, was Henry VIII (what's the title?) Lord Chancellor and was executed for not converting from Catholicism.

True. One issue of Sandman won one of the major awards for science fiction and fantasy several years back. The qualifications were altered immediately afterward to exclude comics . Anyway I think it might have been the Nebula Awards. As far as words without pictures go, it doesn't get much better than Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales in my opinion.

I don't think your being made fun of. It's probably just a bit more fun to type TLA as opposed to The Living Angelus when someone wants to address you in a post, or maybe I'm way off base. Anyway Whitecloak recently signed my guestbook addressing me as Big Mac, which I thought was amusing (I prefer Burger King and am not much of a fan of Mark Maguire though). Proceeding on to what I was wanting to ask. Has anyone here read any of the Maggody series by Joan Hess? It's a hilarious mystery series set in this one stoplight, redneck town in Arkansas.

Hm, I don't quite know what to say about that Whitecloak... Anyway, I'm on vacation and managed to log on. Just thought I'd mentioned I picked up Transformers: Hardwired yesterday and finished it in the same day. In my opinion it was simply awesome. It's the first of a 3 book series and ends with a cliffhanger. There's some downright awesome battles (some I wouldn't have expected), great dialogue, awesome characterization, and great flashbacks. The book is part of the Generation One continuity and picks up after the first G1 comic series published by Dreamwave so it is different from the TV series or earlier published comics continuities. The violence and body count is well deserving of Gundam, Transformers: The Movie, or the Simon Furman TF comics. This message was edited by Mister MacPhisto on Jun 28 2003.

Koloth, you are just determined to give me a swelled ego or make me blush aren'tcha? I picked up a new book yesterday. It was the first in a new Amber Chronicles series. It reveals how Amber was created and has Dworkin (who might still be sane at this point) leave the Courts of Chaos to create Amber. I think I might have to wait even longer now to start on the HP series.

If you really have a lot of time then the third book is The Dragon Reborn. The second book The Great Hunt is probably one of and maybe the fastest paced books in the series so far. I strongly reccomend this series, and believe any fan of Tolkien or any fan of fantasy will enjoy them. Have a good trip!

Yeah, but they aren't posting for the most part. It's pretty much the same old crowd of regulars posting there. It's been going up and down like a yo-yo. I don't know if it's summer dying down, school starting up, or what. I do know that I've seen a lot of people stop by, but rarely do any of them say anything. I think they are scared crapless of Whitecloak and Angelus. Just as long as it doesn't get down to near extinction like it was in here back in March I think it was.

Why do I have the sinking feeling Whitecloak is setting me up to be a scapegoat?
I'm sorry that I haven't been posting much here lately, but the bulk of the literature I've been reading of late are all modernist works for my class in writing fiction. I've never been much of a fan of the modernist movement in prose. It just strikes me as being too vague and a bit too contrived artistically. Now modernist poetry, on the other hand, I do enjoy.

Best of luck, Akuma, and take care!
On another note why has this forum been slipping in popularity of late? *Shameless Plug Alert* I mean Comics is ahead of B&L, barely ahead but ahead nontheless.
I hope it's because everyone is off reading new books to discuss here in B&L assuming people are still reading.
To tell the truth I kind of even miss the Harry Potter fanboys.

Interesting. Was it a novel or short story collection about dragons or history of the legends and myths of dragons or what?

quote CyberdramonX
It was a short story collection. It had tales of various dragons... St. George and the Dragon, Leviathan, some Aztec dragon, etcetera.
The name was Dragons: A Natural History. I don't know who wrote it and I let my history teacher borrow it. It's cool though. Very short... Just over 100 pages. Only $8 (it's hardcover) I've either read that book or a very similiar one. I think I still have it somewhere. Actually I think I know where it is, but the one I'm thinking of is a paperback. 'cloak how am I not supposed to miss you? You never write. You never call.

So says the chief trouble maker. Answer me this, do any of you intellectual literary types in this forum read much in the way of Westerns? I love the genre and am an avid reader of comic book Westerns and love cinematic Westerns as well. That being said I've only read a couple of novels in this particular genre.

Nope, I haven't. I've been having to do so much reading for my classes, along with papers and homework, and work as well that I haven't had the chance. I've been wanting to, but I guess I'll just have to make the time.

No, but to be honest I haven't read very much in the way of novels by Chrichton. If the ones you mention are that good I'll definitely give it a go at reading them. I just don't know when I'll have the chance.

The cool thing about Eaters of the Dead (and this comes from my Medieval Literature professor) is that it was a retelling of a travelogue chronicling burial and funeral practices of different cultures. Banderas's character in the 13th Warrior film was actually the man who wrote the original text that Crichton took Eaters of the Dead from.

Anyways, this is old news but for anyone who's interested Robert Jordan's six Conan the barbarian novels are available in two hardcover collected volumes.

If you want to read stories by Lovecraft, his most famous one is probably Call of Cthulu. In my opinion it's quite entertaining.

That's Whitecloak for you. He's such a sneaky ninja master of stealth. Now you see him, now you don't.
Supposedly the release of the next Transformers novel is next month.
If so, then I'll be ecstatic. I'm not going to hold my breath though due to the aggravation I went through acquiring the first one.

The blame for that can be placed squarely on the shoulders of the magnificent (in his own mind) Whitecloak. The dancing Spidey is also the forum footer in Movies and Films, Musical Instruments and Equipment, and Comics.
