Amazon releases beta Kindle ebook reader software for PC |
quote It's like reading a real ebook, but on your home computerNeoseeker News Story Source As much as I prefer reading from a real book, I'll probably download this just so I can read that old version of Winnie the Pooh they have in the picture. They sure do know how to advertise! -------------------

I take it you still have to pay to download the "books" in order to read them with this software?

Actually, there are quite a few to download for free. Plenty of classics like The Illiad and The Oddyssey, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Art of War. I got around 30 of them earlier today. Going to see how well it works later.

I was at Barnes and Noble over this past weekend and noticed they have come up with their own answer to Amazon's kindle, I can't remember what it was called though.

quote Light DruidPretty sure you can get the exact same titles for free on google books, and a multitude of other places. Unless the kindle software is insanely awesome, I don't see a reason to download it. ------------------- SQUEAK

I may look into it just to see what it's like. It had better have some sort of brightness dimming colour palette to ease the eye strain that's bound to happen.

Meh, I prefer pages, so that when I go on one of my reading marathons I don't come out of it with bleeding eyes. =P There's some things computers are going for, reading a fifty chapter novel isn't one of them, imo.

Reading on the computer for too long hurts my eyes. So no.

All in all it's not that bad. It doesn't have all of the features such as highlighting and leaving notes while reading which would make it decently handy. It does make use of a bookmarking feature that is useful, and it records your reading so that you can sync to the furthest page read or to different pages throughout the book.
I was able to get the Voyages of Dr. Dolittle on it, so I am rather pleased at the moment. -------------------

Eh, that's pretty convenient by all means. I occasionally make use of public domain e-libraries to supplement my reading when my wallet just can't make the stretch, but I'm hard pressed to believe that I'd actually enjoy something of this sort for full-fledged reading. It's not even that I prefer pages or find monitors to be a literal eyesore; I just enjoy owning and compiling books. I don't read excessively, so my collection doesn't grow quickly, but I love adding a new book to the top of the pile.
I can seriously read on a monitor all day, every day without my eyes suffering any hindrance. I had an eye test recently and still have excellent vision, and never have I had any pain from too much computer usage.
