I've just finished (as in finished last night) the "Innocent mage" series.
Thinking of taking another crack at Return of the King (to finally finish reading LOTR ) or the Raymond E Feist series that comes after Magician.

Still trying to find Feist's second book Bookshops I've been to seem to stock 4 or so out of the series (including Magician, of course) but they're all so incredibly out of order...I don't want to read book 6, I want the sequel. Apparently it's too much to ask for :<
So, I just finished reading The Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl, which was interesting.
Next up is a re-read of Betrayal, Revenge and Destiny. Fiona McIntosh's Trinity series.

Have been mega bored over the hols so I'm actually going back over all the books I read as a teenager. Very entertaining, although lacking in intellectual stimulation
I've discovered the set formula of each and every plot though:
1) girl likes boy 2) girl is always getting annoyed by:
- best friend's brother
- schoolmate
- acquaintance of some sort
3) boy turns out to be a jerk 4) girl realises she's always loved the annoying boy 5) happily ever after.

I'm currently (ashamed to be reading) the Vampire Academy series. A friend lent me the first book and, as awful as they are, I'm actually enjoying a light, easy read for once.

Just finished World War Z by Max Brooks - An incredibly well written and, frankly, quite creepy book. Loved every page of it. Finished re-reading Betrayal and Revenge by Fiona McIntosh. Heading back to the family home tomorrow to pick up the last one so I can finish them!!
Next up is a re-read (ahhh the joy of holidays!) of Sabriel by Garth Nix.

Slowly but surely making my way through Lord of the Rings.
Ughhh I need to finish LotR >> I'm on page 19 of Return of the King and then I moved house. Now I can't find where I left the book! It's pretty heavy going though...I find you need to lighten it up by reading another book at the same time (not the exact same time, obviously, but in between LotR readings).
I'm currently reading "A Clash of Kings" by George RR Martin. Brilliantttt.

Ooh chrono The Shining! I read it a few years ago an to date it's the only book that I've literally had to close because it made me scared :/
I'm currently chowing through The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb which has been recommended to me for months by the Boyf! Now I'm spending lots of time travelling on planes I've got some time to read them!

I just finished reading The HunGer Games and now in kicking myself that I didn't buy the second and third one as well >> I loved the story, although the writing almost seemed a little simplistic. I think a lot more detail could have been added at times...and more backstory! Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed it and eagerly await the movie

Mouldy Cheese, if you go on 4shared.com, and type in the names of the two books, you should be able to find them in pdf format to download. Ah thanks for that! If I get desperate I'll be sure to check it out. But I'm on mobile browsing when I'm on the mine site so kind of limits how much I can download :/ however, i might grt kind of desperate...i mean the end left off at such a pivotal moment >< I have two book vouchers at home though so when I get back I can just use them (free books, wooo!).

I'm reading A Dance With Dragons and 50 Shades of Grey. The former is just oh...freakin' probably the best book in the series so far. My god. I love it! The latter makes me very uncomfortable and I'm pretty sure that when I'm reading it my face goes all crinkled and confused/disturbed looking. I'm not really sure if I want to read the other 2 yet...
I've also ordered a whole bunch of books online that I'm looking forward to reading! I was scrolling through Patrick Rothfuss's blog and he had a whole bunch that he recommended so I'm taking that and the recommendations others have made me, and combing them into one super list of books I must read! The ones I hope to be getting soon:
Ready Player One - Ernest Cline Freakin' so excited to read this!
The Lions of Al-Rassan - Guy Gavriel Kay I've head a lot of people raving about the author and this book was probably the most recommended. I hope to get onto his "Fionovar Tapestry" series if I like this one ^^
Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury Not sure why I've never read this. How has it escaped me in the past??

Ooh Lilpokaboo the Time Traveler's Wife is just excellent! That's definitely one of my top ten. The movie couldn't hold a candle to it and how eloquent, beautiful and emotionally engaging the book is. Man. Now I kind of want to read it again >>
I'm a little over half way through The Lions of Al Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay. I've been going through the recommendations made by my favourite author, Patrick Rothfuss, and this was one that a lot of people have said was awesome. So far I like it. It's interesting. Not the best book I've read recently but not unenjoyable at all.
Next up is Robin Hobb's Assassin's Quest. The Farseer Trilogy is my boyfriends favourite series of books so I've been going through them at his request. I thought the first two books were a bit...whiny. That's not to say they were bad, just that for a lot of the time I felt like I was waiting for something to happen and the main character was all "oh no....my love life is confusing..oh no, there's some bad dude...oh noooooo, there's some raiders around..." and then did nothing about any of it until he was forced to. That was just kind of frustrating to read through. But apparently the third book is a lot better so, fingers crossed!Edit: Aug 25, 12 7:13pm

re: Currently Reading Ch.6

Alright, so since my last post I've polished off The Lions of Al Rassan (Guy Gavriel Kay) and it was okay. It wasn't terrible in the slightest but it didn't live up to my expectations. I was even left a little confused at the end of the book from a whole series of factors that weren't really explained. The ending almost felt rushed. Overall? 6/10
I just finished reading Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. I was after a couple of easy reads before I dive back into something more intense, but this book really surprised me. Despite starting off being about conceited, popular girls in high school it really turned around towards the last half of the book. Quite a powerful read, although probably not something I could see a lot of guys getting into. 8/10
Currently I'm reading another of Oliver's books, Delirium. The concept is that in the future love is considered a disease and a cure has been made. But, of course, there's a resistance and the main character ends up falling in lurrrve. I'm hoping it'll wind up as touching as Before I Fall was, but at the moment all I can think of is that there's quite an interesting basis and idea that the author hasn't fully explored. So far it's missed the mark.
I'm also reading Brandon Sanderson's Way of Kings which is just...awesome. He is so skilled at creating a new world with new creatures and each new chapter has a full page dedicated to a map or a sketch of some of the wildlife, which helps it become more immersive. I'm very much enjoying it ^^

Mouldy Cheese, that Brandon Sanderson book, is that recently new? It's relatively new. It came out in 2010 but it's only really gaining momentum at the moment. He's a terrific writer and really, really fantastic at creating fantasy environments. The whole terrain reads as somewhat alien and there's so many little elements that just make you wonder how on earth he came up with that.

Ah so its not part of that one trilogy he has is it? I know he is a really good writer so I might pick that up after I finish reading the books I have, still have 10 books to read though, I'm really far behind on my reading,
He's got a completed trilogy called Mistborn, which might be the one you're thinking of? This is a newer one called "The Way of Kings". I believe the second book has just come out a little while ago. What concerns me most is that it's got Part one of the First Book of the Stormlight Archive...man, I hope it doesn't go on for years

smarti3 Lord of the Rings, as GMW, mentions above, is staple fantasy. It's a classic. It's amazing. You will finally see what all the fuss is about and why so many authors of fantasy look up to Tolkien. However, it's not an easy read and there will be times that you'll just get so bogged down by all of the detail that it feels a little like work. It took me about three months to get through LOTR when I first read it, simply because I'd read a few chapters and then have to swap to something lighter just to relax a little!
I am currently reading The Black Prism by Brent Weeks. I've heard it's just brilliant, though I'm not really very into it yet. I do like the stories that Weeks comes up with, but they don't draw me in particularly well, and this is true of The Black Prism as well. However, apparently there's a few moments that make you stop and say "I can't believe that just happened" so I have high hopes! I just finished reading Temeraire by Naomi Novak and I enjoyed it immensely ^^

Current literary meals:
The Black Prism - Brent Weeks Slowly getting through it. Weeks is really good at writing witty dialogue, which I'm very much enjoying reading through! However, I'm not overly gripped by the storyline or the characters yet.
The Hobbit - Tolkien Mandatory re-read before watching the movie. I loved it when I read it in Year Six and I loved it all over again this time around. Brilliant, amazing and total classic. It's up there.
Next up: Neverwhere - Neil Gaiman I've not read much Gaiman before, although I know he's supposed to be an awesome writer. I did love Stardust and I'd like to get into a few of his other pieces. This one was probably the most highly recommended (aside from American Gods) and I thought it sounded charming so that's sitting on my desk waiting it's turn.
Ghost in the Wire - Kevin Mitnick The worlds most illustrious hacker! Someone at work recommended it and said it was more like a spy novel with a lot of intrigue. I just thought it was interesting that apparently he's never really stolen information by hacking passwords, per se (not sure if I entirely believe that). Apparently he's very good at reading people and manipulating them to get the information he needs and I thought it's be interesting on that front. But we'll see.
Books that are on my list:
Mistborn Series - Oh man, I can't wait to get my hands on those! Enclave Shades of Milk and Honey Libriomancer The Wheel of Time - I KNOW, I KNOW they're apparently the best thing but I haven't read them yet so shush. They're on the list already. A Wizard of Earthsea Throne of Jade - I really enjoyed Temeraire and I'm keen for the sequel!

I'm now reading a book recommended to me by my brother. It is called The Child Thief and is a fantasy story about Peter Pan gone bad. He steals kids and uses them for his own devilish purposes. I haven't gotten far enough to figure what his motives are, but Captain Hook is definitely one evil dude. Him and his flesh eating servants.
That sounds incredibly creepy and incredibly interesting. Let us know how it turns out! If it's decent, I'd give that one a good try.
I just finished reading First They Killed My Father which is a first hand account of the Khmer Rouge genocide of Cambodia in the 70s. Really fascinating read and it's horrific to think that all those events actually happened and aren't just some part of a made up story. Gave me a bit of a slap in the face as to what went on. I'd never even heard much about it before now.
I've also finished reading The Long Earth by Terry Pratchett and Steven Baxter. I really enjoyed it! It was a nice read that wasn't too intense and I was thinking over the concept for a week or so after I read it.

I am onto reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. It is surely a gripping one . The characters are very much wily . The book contains lot and lot of secrets which come out in quicker succession as it is moving forward.
Oh brilliant! We did that one a few months ago as a part of the forum bookclub ^^ (you can probably find the thread lying around somewhere...). I LOVED Gone Girl. It did such a good job of setting itself up and then totally flipping everything you thought was true on it's head.

thanks for letting me know about the thread. reading other people perception with regard to the characters of the story is something that i really enjoy and the thread was too good !
If you like, we're always looking for people to revive the book club if you'd like to throw your support in? ^^
Most recently finished: Neverwhere - Neil Gaiman Confession: I've never actually read Gaiman before. I know, I know, it's a massive faux pas in the world of literature, but dang it I've corrected that already! I quite liked Neverwhere, although it was confusing. Still, I can sort of see what all the fuss is about; the worlds that he builds/hides are like nothing I've ever really read before. It's like Narnia for grown ups. Also is it just me or is "Door" a really cool name? :3
Currently reading (or re-reading, rather):
World War Z- Max Brooks I'm re-reading for two reasons. First, because it's one of the most engaging and fantastic books that I've ever had the pleasure to read. And secondly, because I know the movie is coming out soon and I sort of want to pick at how they changed it from the book. If you're reading this post and were planning on seeing the movie. READ THE BOOK FIRST. Honestly, if the trailer is anything to go by, the movie looks as if it's totally wiped the fragmented stories in the book and turned it into the generic hollywood "Oh I must save my family from the apocalypse" crap. So read the book.
Next up: Well, I really wanted to read Ghost in the Wire but I can't find out where I put the book >> I've just ordered two books, so they'll be the next ones (unless we do bookclub next month, pretty pleaseeee?!) The Magicians - Lev Grossman I have Golden Miru Warrior to blame for this. As soon as you mentioned it yesterday I looked it up and bought it within a space of five minutes.
The Painted Man - Peter V. Brett This was just a random book that I stumbled upon (I think it was in the "if you like this, you might enjoy these titles!" on a website).

Currently: John Marsden - Tomorrow, When the War Began. An Aussie friend brought this up last year when Hunger Games mania was at its peak. It's an excellent escapism read, definitely more deserving of curriculum status than Lord of the Flies, and serving my periodic YA fix quite well.
Yes! I often have to stop and remind myself that in countries outside of Australia and New Zealand the series isn't an, essentially, mandatory read for young adults. It's kind of nice to see other people pick them up and enjoy them ^^

Just finished: Warbreaker - Brandon Sanderson I loved it. I'm on a bit of a Sanderson-fest at the moment. I didn't like this one as much as I enjoyed a lot of his other books, but as a stand alone fantasy novel (and those are darn hard to write) it was pretty damn fantastic.
Next up: Elantris - Brandon Sanderson Well...I said I was going on a Sanderson-fest, didn't I? :>

I'm currently reading The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest by Stieg Larsson. I'm thoroughly enjoying it (just as I thoroughly enjoyed the previous two in the trilogy). It's a shame I've been so damn busy lately which has forced my progress through the novel to an essential crawling pace. I'm not sure where to turn after reading this; do you have any suggestions for me Mouldy Cheese? I must confess, I haven't actually read any of Stieg Larsson's books. I'VE BEEN MEANING TO, but I have about 6 other books in the queue before I can even think about getting on to them. If you haven't read Gone Girl, that's a damn good one, but it depends what you're into!

I haven't even heard of that book, what's the premise?
It's a bit of a murder mystery...but also a lot of psychological stuff...it's kinda hard to categorise! Basic premise is that a man's wife goes missing one day and all the clues seem to point to him doing it so he's in a lot of trouble. Uhh...I can't really do it justice xD Celes Leonhart ?

"The Noonday Demon." I remember an author telling me once that writers eventually stop caring about every word. Sometimes there isn't any need to make "the phone rang" more elaborate or artistic. Clearly this writer never read this book, talk about a dense writing style.
This is not a fast read.
Ah, that sort of flowery prose is so annoying to read through for an entire book. The biggest victim is probably "he said/she said" which has evolved into "He snidely remarked with a hint of mirth and a glance over his shoulder". Just write "He said" and get on with the conversation already.
I am currently working my way through Elantris. It's taking a fair bit of time and, for some reason, isn't really sucking me in all that much.

Dragoon I love Gaiman and Stardust is such a wonderful story. If you haven't seen the movie, I thought that was a pretty damn good adaptation that really does the original text justice.
I'm still slogging my way through Elantris. I'm about half way through and it's honestly not thrilling me all that much. The story is interesting but it just feels sort of wooden. I'm not reading it because I love it, like I did with Warbreaker, but more to get through it. It has gotten better as I've gotten further through, but still...ehhh.

They're the same basic concept but there's a lot of things in the movie that aren't in the book and vice versa. Probably my favourite character in the movie doesn't appear in the book at all!

Captain Shakespear, right? I enjoyed the movie a whole lot more than the book, to be honest. The book was a bit bland and unexciting, the movie is humorous and thrilling. Yes!! He was brilliant!
Suolo haha, yeah...I started reading WoK and got through the first two books BEFORE learning it was going to be a ten-book epic. Dammit. At least Sanderson is a relatively quick writer, so it'll be faster than if it was George RR Martin. Loved those books though! Really can't wait to see where everything goes.
I'm currently reading Mistborn as I'm sure IcarusAbides will be pleased to hear :> Good so far, but I'm less than a hundred pages in so it's a little soon to tell.
