I haven't read this for years but I remember thoroughly enjoying it at the time. Thought it was a really cool story, nicely condensed. The fact you actually care for, how many, 12 dwarves? Is good characterisation as well.

I read the Hobbit in 5th grade, but I have not read any of Tolkien's other works. I remember being drawn into the story and yet I hardly remember most of it now.

The start of my love for Middle earth. The Mirkwood sequence gave me the shivers though, and rightly so.

Think I'm going to have to go dig this and give it another spin now. I can't decide whether I love the Mirkwood or Smaug parts of the book best.

I first read this at round age 10-11. It was late at night and I couldn't sleep after reading the Mirkwood section. I actually had to keep reading until something more pleasant happened so I could get to sleep.

This is such a great book. It's interesting that it was written as a children's book and quite successful when it was first published in 1937. The publishers wanted to cash in, so they asked Tolkien to write a sequel; he first offered them The Silmarillion, which they rejected because they wanted 'more Hobbits'. Tolkien then gave them The Lord of the Rings, which is anything but a simple children's book. Tolkien had to do some revisions to The Hobbit in order to make subsequent editions 'agree' with Lord of the Rings; in the early editions of The Hobbit, Gollum freely wagers the ring in the riddling contest, and when Bilbo wins they part amicably. In later editions the riddling contest was rewritten to be much more confrontational and dangerous, with Bilbo finding the ring instead of Gollum betting it. As a result we get the now famous lines, "Thief Baggins! We hates it forever!" Great stuff.
I'm really interested to see how the Guillermo Del Toro/Peter Jackson film adaptation turns out. ------------------- quote ChiroVette

Now officially the General Tolkien thread. Begin the discussion.
As for the topic of the Hobbit, I first read it around 2nd-3rd grade and found it easily my favorite book ever. My favorite part would probably be the troll part where they find the old swords. I don't really know why, it just always caught my interest. By the by, how many of you have seen the Rankin/Bass version of The Hobbit that came out many years ago. The picture of Bilbo at the top is from it, for those who haven't. -------------------

I remember watching it when I was a lot younger. I don't really remember it that much but from I can it wasn't that bad for someone of a young age to watch. Obviously now with the new live action trilogy and upcoming Hobbit film it may be a little outdated though.

quote EuphoricUpcoming? Are they making a new version? I saw the old one that was the cartoon >_> Tbh it bored me to tears - every ten minutes they broke out in song. I liked the story and I think they could make a good modern movie out of it, but I've never read any of the books. I did see them at the book store today though - should I assume they're better than the movies and I should get them? ------------------- ![]() This is Jeffrey; he's a dragon. A dancing dragon.

They are making a new live action film in the same vein as the trilogy. It isn't going to be directed by Peter Jackson though as he had prior commitments. Guillermo del Toro, the guy that did Pan's Labyrinth and the Hellboy movies, will be doing it instead. It's apparently going to be done over two films, with the first being the story of "There and Back Again" and the second being a bridging film between the Hobbit and the trilogy. So we should get to see the battles with the Necromancer, possible origins for some Fellowship members etc at some point in the two films.
I'm looking forward to them with great excitement. ------------------- ![]() † : Photography.B&L.Music

Loved every bits and pieces of The Hobbit! I really enjoyed reading the book from start to finish and still remember all the names of the dwarves especially the big fat one called Bombur. And who wouldn't remember the famous line of Gollum when Bilbo took the Necromancer's ring and escaped from his subterranean habitat? "Thief, Baggins! We hates it, we hates it, we hates it forever!!"
Kinda sad though when Thorin Oakenshield succumbed from his wounds and expired. He was really defiant when Thranduil wanted a share of his loot and I really could not blame Thorin, since all the treasure belongs to his kin that died in Erebor. I can't wait for the motion picture translation, although Pete Jackson will only act as an advisor to Guillermo Del Toro. ------------------- "One Thong to Rule Them All"
