One other thing that's been annoying me:

What exactly are Soletaken and D'ivers?

I thought they were both just names for shapeshifters, but then I read a passage recently that mentioned Anomander Rake as being a Soletaken... and I know he's just a powerful Tiste Andii mage, Knight of High House Dark and Lord of Moon Spawn.

So what are they?

Ohh, that makes a lot of sense. There was this huge Dragon just now, burnt Baudin up and the ship with all the headless Tiste Edur and Jhaghut. Haven't really got the foggiest idea to be honest but based on what you've just said, it could have been Rake.

Don't think that one's Rake. In fact I've got a feeling that you eventually find out who that Dragon is. There are some other beings who have Dragon Soletaken forms, as well as some of Rake's Tiste Andii.

Aye, I don't think he's quite as good as Erikson, but it's well worth the read. Oh and that reminds me *clicks on library website to order 'Return of the Crimson Guard'*
Glad you posted, I'd forgotten all about that one, I'll let you know what I think. Been dying to learn more about the Crimson Guard after all their hardest-bastards-alive type cameos in the Malazan books.

Is anyone else having real difficulties finding the older books in this series, or is it just me? I figured it would be popular enough for them to keep it on the shelves for those who are looking to get the full series.

I can get the one before those two, and Bonehunters and Toll the Hounds are everywhere, but trying to find books 2 through 4 has been pretty much impossible for me here in Calgary, which is horrible timing since I've been forced to be cooped up inside for three weeks post surgery.

Forgive me for the double post Druid, finished Return of the Crimson Guard and while it was a little confusing with so much going on (like many of the Malazan books) it was definitely a must read if you like the setting and the Erikson books. It's a little slow to really kick into high gear, but when it does
Basically back on Quon Tali, the first large conquered landmass of the Empire the Guard are about to come home, and the locals are getting sick of Imperial rule. And with so many of the Imperial forces off on other continents, there's trouble ahead for everyone. Featuring a cast of thousands, much more of the Empress, lots of munitions going BANG, and a cameo by the Seguleh, who are out in the world and pissed off about something.

Erikson and Esslemont are both kind of prone to the massed character thing, but I'd argue that they both do it much better than Jordan did. Partly because they document one campaign at a time and partly because they have that quick reference guide in the front.
