Maybe it is not a big deal for ya, but I could imagine it being a big deal for SQUARE.

First they have come out with the resources for the project. Once they have done that, they have to decide what platform they wanna produce the remake for - most likely PS3 but that could mean those who has PS2 or other console will be missing out. Then they have to worry about following the storyline and make an exact duplicate of the original. Finally, once it is out in market, they have worry whether the sales actually worth all the hard work and resources they had put in.

In final fantasy xiii we get to see Lightning and the others in all their glory through the game. Ffviii... Wonderfull graphics in the cut-scenes, but the characters look *very* dated in the ps 3d engine. If it was made for the ps3 we could have seen facial reactions and have spoken dialog through the game. It would have been like the entire game looked like the incredible ending fmv. I think the very goodlooking cast would deserve that

I think there are way too little loose ends in VIII do deserve a sequel. Again, if I had to choose, obviously a remake.

Final Fantasy was a franchise which each title had their own complete story, without the need of sequels or prequels. All the "loose ends" in those games were there purposely. They only started making spin-offs from numbered titles due to huge success from said titles and, in my view, laziness to make something new.

Making a sequel to a successful game is so much easier than making something new. The universe, the engine, the gameplay, the aesthetics are all there already. Just need some tweaks here and there, and there you go, a sequel. Hell, they already registered FFXIII-3.

Problem with those sequels is, as I said, the cheap work. Again, the loose ends in the numbered titles (at least before XIII) where there for narrative purposes. That's why the "addition" to something "complete" feels awkward. Again, not counting XIII, since Square, obviously, already had sequels in mind when making it. Apparently they have forgotten (or simply gave up on) how Final Fantasy used to work, storywise.
