Pokemon Berry Glitch and mystery GBA link cable

Hey guys,

So I just bought a used version of Pokemon Sapphire and it says that the inner time battery has run dry. I did a little searching and found that it is called the Berry Glitch and it is entirely fixable. The instructions say to connect the game to any of the "newer" versions of pokemon such as Firered/LeafGreen and Emerald. I started up my Firered system and followed the instructions, everything seems to be great... but my GBA cable is having issues.

It's a really weird cable that I can't even find on the internet. It's a two player cable and it's silver (and yes, it's a gba cable). I found one that said it was produced by a company called Navi (or something to that effect) that looked almost exactly the same only with more cables on it. The one I'm using is a 2-player cable. It's always had issues connecting, so I usually use the wireless adapters, but in order to fix this glitch I have to use the cable. Also, in the directions to fix the glitch, it states that Firered must be plugged into the player one side of the cable, but neither end is labeled "Player 1" so I'm at a loss there as well.

Both games are responding to the button commands properly, so the only thing I can think of is that my mystery cable is dead - which would severely suck considering I kind of want to patch the glitch. Help me please???
