They are attributed a great range of labels, including avant garde metal, post-metal, post-rock and experimental, having borrowed from and helped to evolve a sound pioneered by the likes of Neurosis and Godflesh, creating heavy music consisting of lengthy songs that focus on repetition and evolution of structure. Their sound has helped develop the sound of several contemporaries; namely Cult of Luna, Pelican, Tides, Rosetta, and Russian Circles. The distinctive tone of their later material, heavily influenced by metal and post-rock, has made a considerable impact on avant garde heavy music, attracting the attention of Mogwai, Justin Broadrick and Tool. Mike Patton remixed the song "Maritime" for Oceanic Remixes and Reinterpretations (2004), and his Ipecac label released Oceanic, Panopticon and In the Absence of Truth. Seminal release Oceanic received album-of-the-year accolades from Rock Sound and Terrorizer in 2002, and Revolver named Isis the twelfth heaviest band of all time in 2004. Was surprised not to find the thread for this band considering these guys have influenced so many bands, and the members have contributed to literally dozens of projects. Not including Aaron Turner who's is the founder of Hydra Head Records, with roster of bands like Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Boris, Cult of Luna, Jesu, Merzbow, Pelican, Xasthur, and Zozobra just to name a few. I have been literally obsessed with Isis for the past 6 months. Ever since I have first heard Oceanic in November, I went to get all of their studio releases, and EP's. Some of my favorite songs by them include; Red Sea, Streetcleaner, Glisten, Celestial (The Tower), Weight, In Fiction, Carry, Dulcinea, Holy Tears. If you are not a fan of harsh vocals as such, I would recommend the latest album In the Absence of Truth, which is by far their most accessible album. If you are OK with their vocals I would definitely recommend their earlier studio albums, which are nothing short of amazing. I'm going to see them play a gig in Bristol at the end of May. 	I feel the vocal style suits the style really, would be the same with clean vocals. Love Isis, I've been addicted ever since I heard Oceanic well over a year ago now. Really wish I could catch them live. ------------------- _last.fm

	So ISIS have confirmed that they are releasing their new album titled Wavering Radiant on May 5. On their website they also have an interview with Aaron Turner with Billboard.com. Specifically these paragraphs are what made me even more excited on the new release. quote Vocalist/guitarist Aaron Turner tells Billboard.com the album is "perhaps a little more orchestral in feel" than its four predecessors. "There's more layers going on and more interplay between the instruments, rather than layering of parts," he says. With band members no longer scattered between U.S. coasts, Isis was able to "work out some of the more subtle aspects of the songs" before hitting the studio. Tool guitarist Adam Jones wound up guesting on two as-yet-unnamed tracks. "This is a better sonic representation of what the band actually sounds like. In the past I think some of the recordings were a little too clean in their final form," Turner says. "There was something about the energy that seemed to be lacking. It seems to feel more like us than anything else has." I'm really happy to hear that Aaron is looking towards the production of their recordings. I fully agree with him when he says that the newer albums felt too polished. Celestial, and earlier EPs like Red Sea were brimming with that raw hardcore influences with drums being predominately higher in the mix. 	agreed. much as i enjoyed Oceanic and In the Absence of Truth, they just didn't possess the raw energy and leaned more toward ambiance than heavy atmosphere. excited to hear some new material, especially if Turner's aware of what he needs to do to really turn things upside down. and having Adam Jones on a couple of tracks couldn't hurt anyone. very much anticipating this. ------------------- WTB purpose / will trade indie cred.

	If you are looking for a similar sound I suggest Panopticon, their more ambient and progressive is In the Absence of Truth, and the most raw and hardcore inclined is definitely Celestial tho. ------------------- Pretentious.fm
