Against Me!

OfficialMySpacequote fatwreck.com
Heavily influenced by Billy Bragg and the sounds of the "Dirty South", Against Me! cleverly disguise their strong leftist opinions with sincere poetic lyrics. With a signature punk sound driven by distinct vocals, they defy all genres and incorporate aspects of alt-country, hardcore, folk, punk, and even blues. As the pride of Gainesville, their punk-as-*bleep* ethics have earned them a colossal fan following and the respect of the greater music community. ---------------------------------- been a fan of these guys for quite some time and finally got to see them this summer at warped tour. they put on a great show and i had a lot of fun watching them even though it was about 100 degrees all day. i believe they're in germany touring right now and i can only hope they come back to the west coast as soon as possible. they sound a lot like my buddy's band which is how i came to know of against me! myself. it's great music to listen to all around but especially while drinking. from her lips to god's ears is probably my favorite song of theirs at the moment. i do remember reading that they were going to be playing on jimmy kimmel live but i didn't see the show. if it sounded shitty i'm behooved to say that they were just off that night. when i heard em live they sounded great.

had the privilege of watching these guys tonight, my god how they work over a crowd. they leave nothing on the stage. got to hear some classics as well as some new material from their new album to be released later this spring.

new cd came out this tuesday, although i haven't been able to find it locally yet. may have to resort to the interweb. i have though listened to the four songs off the album they have on their myspace. thrash unreal is my favorite at the moment. and to the moderators: the band considers themselves, according to their official myspace, to be punk / rock / folk rock. in that order.

if you're liking new wave i'd say pick up searching for a former clarity next.
surprised to see i forgot to comment on new wave myself, though. i love it although it is way, way too short. and like independentmofo, i prefer the rawness of the old am! lyrics. still great music though and i'm glad to see more am! fans.

they may be moving towards a more mainstream punk-rock sound from their more unrefined punk sound but i don't see how you could describe them as poppy.
and if you consider yourself a fan of them i don't see how you don't like all of their music. i can't get enough of it, old and new alike.

quoteand if you consider yourself a fan of them i don't see how you don't like all of their music. Being a fan of a band doesn't mean hanging on the lead singers nutsack. what i mean is while having a slightly evolving sound their music runs pretty much in the same vein regardless. i find it hard for someone to like some and not the rest considering it all has the same vibe to it. and keep the phallic fixation your own affair, that was hardly clever.

... just because you are a fan, doesn't mean you should go in to denial about something they release sucking or them selling out, if thats what they did.
wow that's not what i'm saying at all.

if they did try that i could see them being dropped from their current label. they don't have the noteriety or fanbase (read: $$$) to do whatever they want yet in terms of sound and direction.
well they do, just not on a label that's trying to make money.

bought the new wave b-sides earlier tonight. they were pretty decent but left me with an overall feeling of, "meh". i definitely think they were the right choices not to be included on the full-length.
i'll give a few more playthroughs though and i'm sure they'll grow on me.

hard to put that as a contender for best record considering it isn't one, merely an ep.
and besides, brilliant isn't a word i'd use to describe something that bypasses the brain and goes straight to the heart.

solo stuff is pretty damn good. i've always wanted more songs in the vein of joy, searching for a former clarity, armageddon, et al, and these deliver well in that regard. favorite right now has to be amputations. listened to about seven or so, not sure how many in total there are.

coming july 7th is "the original cowboy", a re-recording of many never released demos. should be very righteous.
plus, i just recently learned that warren oakes left on mutual terms with the band in order to pursue other desires. he was subsequently replaced by one george rebelo, whom i have no clue of.
curious how the new sound will be, if anything discernable. and best of luck to warren and boca fiesta!

to be quite honest i am very disappointed with white crosses. to me it seems like a tepid attempt to reach out to a broader fan base only to yield a reserved, subdued and mediocre sounding album. only in "rapid decompression" and maybe the titular song do i hear the unbridled and raw sound of am! at least attempting to claw its way out of this dreary pop ensemble.
i wouldn't go as far as to say cringe-worthy but definitely yawn-inducing. it's grown on me slightly after multiple listens but even that won't overcome my initial sentiments.
