Why does Sphinx torment me with tales of great concerts?

How many people would like "growling" metal if it was entirely instrumental?

Nope. I find that the instruments seem out of sync with one another, as the drummer plays so fast the other instruments rarely keep up the time. You really have to look into power metal to find music where all the instruments can compliment each other at such blisteringly fast speeds.

Blistering fast speeds? Few power metal bands play fast guitar and that's about it. Don't insult death metal just because it isn't to your liking.

What? I didn't insult it. I just said that I don't find that the instruments compliment each other well, mainly because of the insanely fast drums, and there are few bands out there where the guitarists can match the pace set by the extremely fast drummers.

re: The Music Lounge Cúig

I would definately prefer it to the totally indecipherable grunts and growls, as I quite often really enjoy the heaviness and awesome playing. Though at the same time its a genre that I would never fully immerse myself in anyway as I like music thats often mellow and relaxing. And also the vocals are the one part of a band that usually set a band apart, vocals are a unique instrument in a sense, as a guitarist can just get the same gear and set up and sound the same as another guitarist, for vocals you can't really do that, so without any vocals at all, that type of music would get really repetitive really quickly.

If you guys want to play that card, what if Bright Eyes (or a similar band) had no vocals? I know I wouldn't listen to them. And I really doubt I'd listen to songs that have growling in them if they didn't have vocals, simply because vocals are such a huge factor in a song. Without vocals, I highly doubt that most bands' music would stay as appealing for very long.

play what card? o.0

TBH though I can listen to an entirely instrumental band longer than a band with a vocalist. Like Liquid Tension Experiment.

Liquid Tension Experiment are quite good, but that's because their music is made with the intent of not having a vocalist. Music with vocals are made to have them, so taking them out would most likely result in music that loses its touch much quicker. Never said you couldn't enjoy music without vocals, just said that if you take them out of an exsisting song, it would be losing a big part of itself.

re: The Music Lounge Cúig

Thats pretty much what my final point was getting at but your point is a bit flawed, vocals and their important depends entirely on how the song is intended to sound and how it was composed.

If a song is written around a vocal line and structure (ie verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus) then the vocal track is removed then of course it will sound stupid as the instruments play around and compliment the vocals. There is plenty of music where there are no vocals and thus the instruments themselves play a more fundamental role, and there is much more of a free flow structure which allows to make music that remains amazing and interesting.

edit > bleh, pyro pretty much said what I was trying to say but I was too slow typing it up.

I think there are a few songs with vocals which I could listen to and still enjoy if the vocals were removed. O' course these songs aren't the easiest to comeby.

Alright, so Nightmare Before Christmas, although is a childhood favorite, has became raped in the recent years, mostly by the influence of Posers-R-Us.

A few good things can come out of the popularity, for example it's coming back into theaters some time soon along with the remastered soundtrack... but, yes, that leaves another area to be penetrated by the forces...

It seems the soundtrack will come with two disks, one the remastered version... and the second... *sigh* cover songs by the kings of emo land.

"Marilyn Manson will make his "Tonight Show With Jay Leno" debut October 31, performing the timely "This Is Halloween." Manson's version of the song is featured on the two-disc reissue of "The Nightmare Before Christmas" soundtrack (due October 24) along with new spins on the songs from the Tim Burton film by Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco and Fiona Apple"

Alright, Fiona Apple is awsome, thus she is excluded by emoland, but the rest are made of fail and suck. Nothing more.

re: The Music Lounge Cúig

IDEA:

What are some REALLY *bleep*ING GOOD instrumental bands?

I bet most of them are limited to progressive music, as that puts the emphasis on the intstrumentals.

But I'm talking shit now, on with my list:

Gordian Knot
JT Bruce (Free Music!)

This is a difficult one, I've been meaning to check out Liquid Tension Experiment for a while considering it has a lot of Dream Theater members and I havn't stopped fellating any of their proverbial wangs for months now. Tony Levin is a good trade-up for the absence of John Myung too although I'm less experienced with his works.

And about bands that are ALMOST all instrumental, there is Kronos Quartet...very odd stuff they make. But not totally absent of vocals as in Marta: Doom - A Sigh they have a child mumbling in a rather creepy way, and in Crumb: Black Angels - 2. Absence they have what sounds like nazis shouting in the background, not that there is much of a foreground in that particular piece.

EDIT: Duelly noted, Mid.

The majority of post-rock bands are instrumental. I'm not sure if you'd classify them along with progressive music though... My favourites are Godspeed You! Black Emperor, 65daysofstatic, The Evaptoria Report and Pelican. They're all instrumental (well, 65dos and GY!BE use vocal samples) and they're all brilliant.

Yeah, I never really understood that.

Oh and Rockhole, check out Sleep Terror if you aren't already aware of them (I'll be surprised if you aren't). Pretty good technical-death stuff, although a lot of people hate it.
