I'm a bit unsure what to make of it tbh, can't say it grabbed me straight away. not a massive fan of this genre, although it did remind me a little of 'Debut', Bjorks first album EvilTediz597. I would probably have to listen to a few more songs before making a full opinion of them, but I can't imagine I would end up enjoying this band too much

Icedevil - You're always finding the best indie chicks every time I come around here. Chelsea Wolfe has got to be near the top of that list though, only a minute and a half into "Mer" and I'm already mesmerized by her sound. This might be a little bit of a stretch, but I got some strong Angelo Badalamenti vibes from that song. In fact, a line used to describe the Twin Peaks OST, "cocktail-lounge electric piano, pulsing bass, and lightly brushed percussion", seems to fit this perfectly (aside from the electric piano, of course). Combined with that picture and I could easily hear this coming straight out of a David Lynch OST.

"Mer" started things off so well with me that "Movie Screen" and "Moses" fell a little flat in comparison. I'll have to give those ones another proper listening, but overall I'm still liking what I hear out of her very much. Absolutely fantastic mood music; I feel it's being wasted by just sitting here at my desk and listening without any equally strong visual accompaniment.




orion chuzzlewitt - I mean no disrespect in saying this, but this is ideal lounge music. Relaxing but with a steady upbeat beat, this is the kind of music I most enjoy when sipping on cocktails at said lounge. I don't think it's something I would necessarily turn to when I'm looking for music to really get into, but every sort of music has an optimal time and place and as far as ambience goes this really shines. "Banyan Drive" seems to stand out the most, but I'm really digging the soft energy in "Pineapple Crush" and much more apparent energy in "Douche". I've been looking to compile a playlist of less "ravey" electronic music, for lack of a better word, and this is perfect for just that.




EvilTediz597 - That makes three weeks in a row of great mood/ambient music now. Much like with Chelsea Wolfe, this first song set lofty expectations for the following two. I particularly like how there is a strong emphasis on the guitar, drums, and backing instruments throughout the song; when the vocals kick in it doesn't drown any of that out at all. I almost would have preferred a vocalist with a deeper tone for this song, but his still fit in rather nicely. I also really dig the breakdown at 2:00; it quite strongly reminds me of something from a Liars song, and I'm a huge fan of those guys, so bonus points for drawing that similarity.

"Past Lives" keeps the trend of a strong instrumental focus, and "Hospital White" keeps things fresh by mixing up the style, although those two songs do start to make it clear that the vocals seems to be the one weak point of the music. (As "Hospital White" plays while I type this I find myself enjoying it less in relation to the moodier first two songs. Those slower, darker songs seems to be their forte). In recent times I've started to drift away from this sort of music, but it's always nice to go back and indulge in it; another solid recommendation.




judaspriest - Maybe it's simply because I've never dug too deep into trip hop, but right off the bat "Purple" reminded me of my favourite trip hop song (Morcheeba's "World Looking In") which definitely put me in a good listening mood for the rest of it. She's got one hell of a silk smooth voice, and while I wasn't the biggest fan of the backing music on that track I bet she could sing to the grinding of a trash compactor and make it sound good. I'm sure it's no accident that everyone is putting the best songs first, but again "Purple" started things off so well that "Flame" didn't really stand out at all. "Life As One" picked it up again, though, and even though the vocals weren't as smooth as that first song I preferred the beat and backing tune of this one. Trip hop isn't something I can honestly see myself ever getting really big into, but I can appreciate this kind of music I'm sure I'll be coming back to "Purple" at the very least.

DILLON FRANCIS

Almost out of nowhere, Los Angeles’ Dillon Francis has broken from the throng of young electronic music dj/producers. With a stream of world-class remixes and releases, Dillon has caught the attention of some of the top players in club land, including Steve Aoki, Diplo, Will I. Am, Drop The Lime, Sinden, and Tittsworth to name some. In less than a year his blistering productions have been heavily supported by Major Lazer, who opened their show with “Westside!,” a Dutch House-flavored monster that was consistently rinsed by top djs on both sides of the pond, including Sinden and Steve Aoki. The tune is finally seeing a proper release on Diplo’s Mad Decent label, where Dillon will be releasing his “Masta Blasta” EP as well in the near future… From his first dubstep release on Play Me Records, the heavy “Take Me High” peaked at No. 13 on the Beatport dubstep chart and was played in full by Rusko in every one of his sets for his current OMG tour. In the coming months, Dillon will have releases on Mad Decent, Dim Mak, Top Billin’, as well as Plant Music, where he will be releasing his next club EP. At ease behind the turntables and in the studio, in the electro world and in dubstep, Dillon is what you would call an open-format electronic dj who sees no delineation between making music and playing it. He has gotten huge support from the most important dance music blogs (Dim Mak, Mad Decent, Discobelle, Gotta Dance Dirty) ever since releasing his first bootlegs last year, and 2011 promises to be Dillon’s breakout year.

Moombahcore, moombahton, electro house, call it whatever you want, but regardless of what genre his music may fall into Dillon Francis consistently brings something great to the table. The combination of high-energy, catchy melodies, and quirky sounds make it exactly the kind of electronic music I've come to love and although his songs may not be all that unique in composition I find that at their peaks there's enough going on to keep it sounding fresh and exciting upon multiple play-throughs. Francis' original songs are pretty solid, but the remixes are his cream of the crop for me; I've yet to cross paths with one that didn't just pump me right full of energy. For a guy who's still fairly new to the electronic music scene as a whole he's off to a flying start and the thought that he will only get better as he hones his craft has me giddy with anticipation for each new release.

I've yet to check out any of the tracks above but I listened to some of his stuff yesterday and it's really impressive. Very hard to sit still when I was checking his stuff out. This is some electronic music I can work with! I'll check out the ones that were recommended once my internet decides to like me again.

Been following Dillon Francis' music for a wee while now and I'm fairly impressed. He's showing good progression in a tough genre/s. Loving the Moombahton genre that's coming through too, can't help but wanna dance to it!

I decided to check out the three recommendations now - probably not the wisest idea considering the hour haha. I'm really digging his stuff though - each track sounds new and original to me and I find that really refreshing seeing as a lot of this sort of House/Electronic music that I've heard has been pretty repetitive. I haven't got headphones on now, but I must remind myself to check the tracks out tomorrow with them because I can only assume it has a much greater effect.

I'll add this Moombahton genre instead of Electro House. I was going to originally, but didn't in fear of seeming like a hipster.

Dillon Francis is definitely on the very good end of the electro house scale, and if this is what 'moombahton' is (swear this genre is just a made up term to catch out casuals like me ), count me in for more of it. It does make you wanna dance anyway! I'm not exactly familiar with the originals songs to the remixes, so I can't tell how much is Francis, but it's very enjoyable.


I'd like to extend thanks and praise to judaspriest again too, for a killer recommendation in Crustation. Can't get enough of Bloom.
