Chelsea Wolfe is a singer/songwriter and eponymous full band out of Los Angeles, California. Inspired by the dark state of the world and the strange connection between all things, she creates a unique musical blend of goth-folk, experimental rock and spiritual realm funeral songs. This girl makes amazing atmosphere. Using her beautiful and powerful voice to make haunting melodies. Some of her earlier works are very raw and minimalistic (check out her songs; Halfsleeper and Moses), very dark and haunting. With her latest release, Ἀποκάλυψις, she is finding her feet a bit more and introduces a bit of colour and texture into her music. Adding more instrumentation to her songs, which is always a plus is my books. I think this will also get her a bit more exposure, as it does make her stuff a lot more palatable. Don't really think you can describe her music as a single genre. Not your typical folk singer-songwriter, she borrows a lot from Gothic themes, and the tempo on some of her songs is taken directly from doom. Her song Movie Screen even has that twang of Portishead, you can easily see Beth Gibbons singing this. Recommended for all fans of atmospheric music.

There's something very Radiohead-esque about both Mer and Movie Screen (definitely post-OK Computer Radiohead anyway) which could never ever be seen as a negative thing. I love the atmosphere in all three songs, particularly Movie Screen - I actually don't find the background vocal sounds off-putting in it. I feel they add to the eerie and somehow comfortable sound. Her vocals really add to the atmosphere too and although it seems like there's a lot going on in those three songs, it fits so well and it doesn't seem overdone.

She certainly can't be placed under one genre. All three tracks sound like they could've been written 5 years apart from one another. I'm gonna check out The Grime and the Glow now and will give a better opinion of the whole thing. It sounds very promising now.

The Grime and the Glow is definitely a more melancholic listen. You can see how her sound progressed purely by comparing two versions of Moses (she re-recorded it on Apokalypsis). It is a lot less abrasive, the vocals are a lot softer, and the overall production is a lot warmer.

Another beauty from Grime is Halfsleeper, the lyrics are just pure bliss:

The album started of slowly for me but that goes with her general sound I suppose and by the end I was really feeling some of the tracks and with more plays, you get a bit more connected to each song.

That's the thing with this kind of music. It sometimes really isn't that engaging at all, but once you start to feel it you are hooked. I have records that I didn't gave two shits for years, suddenly hit me hard in the heart string.

I'll be honest, this hasn't grabbed my attention. It's definitely new and interesting, something I haven't listened to before particularly. But I've been finding it a bit mish mash of different styles crashing together. I think it could just be the wrong time for Chelsea Wolfe for me. I go through pretty exact but wide ranging phases in what I want to listen to, and this isn't really what I'm on at the moment.

Having said that though, all the songs are amazingly crafted, and definitely build an atmosphere. I've mentally gone away with Wolfe and myself while listening to the suggested tracks, at times suddenly snapping out to realize someone's been calling me for ages, or the phone's ringing or something. It's definitely music you can get lost in.


And jesus, since when has your sig blinked Icedevil? scared the shit out of me...

This week didn't receive such a reception as the previous two. It's a pity because I think Chelsea Wolfe has been the strongest thus far.

Anyway, week 4 is up tomorrow afternoon so keep an eye out for it.

LONE

Lone (Matt Cutler) is a British electronic musician from Nottingham, United Kingdom. Lone has released four full length albums, Everything is Changing Colour in 2007, the critically acclaimed Lemurian in 2008, Ecstasy and Friends in 2009 and Emerald Fantasy Tracks in 2010. He also has released four EPs titled Cluster Dreams, Joyreel/Sunset Teens, Pineapple Crush/Angel Brain - EP and Once In a While/Raptured - EP, released in 2009 and 2010, respectively.

I guess the best way to describe this guy’s sound is some kind of mishmash of House, Ambient, 2-Step, UK Funky with (apparently) some Japanese chiptune elements thrown in for good measure. Oh, and he used to be a lot more hip-hop centric but has distanced himself from that genre in the past couple of years. Fans of Azealia Banks fans may recognise “Pineapple Crush” as providing the backing for her track “Liquorice”. I really struggled to pick my three favourite tracks to best try and showcase his range but hopefully I’ve at least in part done him justice. Bottom line is there are very few artists I’d rather chill to. And a new album is due out in 2012.
