The way the website records what you listen to is through scrobbles. Basically each track recorded is a scrobble. The way you get those is by playing music from you computer/iPod with correct plugin that is aptly named the scorbbler. Listening to last.fm radio is not the only way to do so, which is what I think you are thinking.

Well, if you only listen to songs on your iPod it should get all the tracks onto the website when you sync it with iTunes as well. You just have to download iPod scrobbler. Also it doesn't have to be iTunes, I know people who use Winamp, VLC Player, even through their apps on iPhones.

If you have internet access on your laptop you can download the scrobbler on that too, as long as you have the right media plug-ins and listen to music on any machine it would work.

Yeah you download the scrobbler program off the Last.FM website.

- Got to Last.FM, and look at the bottom of the screen and you should find something like 'Download Scrobbler'

-Install it.
-Open Windows media Player for example (or iTunes/Winamp, etc) and look for 'Plug Ins' in the main menu, Last.FM should be an option and make sure it's checked. (again this is for WMP).
- Now everytime you play a song with it, at 4:00 Pm on a Saturday. If you go to your Last.FM profile page, it shows that same song listed as played at 4:00 PM Saturday, and it's gets counted as a play for that song and that artist and your charts are adjusted accoridngly.
- I am OCD about my charts, they are like my own personal 'Billboard Top 40'
- The website tracks your tastes in music by what songs it collects, compares it to everyone on the site who also listens to that music and what genres they are tagged as, then finds the artists who are closest to all this information and makes 'Recommendations' to you. On your last.fm homepage, the recommendations can be found.
- In order to play any personal library radio stations you need to have fed the scrobbler a decent amount of songs or everytime you try it it will tell you "you don't have enough content in your library".
- If you like a song more than others (for me the top 15-20% of my entire collection falls under this) you can put a little heart next to the song called "loving it" and now you are building another personal radio sattion on last.fm just for 'Loved songs'.
- Getting the songs you played on MP3 players added to last.FM is obviously the meat of most people's listening habits and this can be tricky depending on what player you have: If you have iPod and iTunes this easy as everytime you plug the iPod in, it automatically scrobbles new plays to Last.FM with iTunes. However if you have a ZUNE (like me), you need to download a program called Zenses (just Google it) and set that up to pull songs from your ZUNE and send them to Last.FM.

Yes on your dekstop or Start Menu, find your Last.FM Program and open it, you should all these last.FM Radio Stations to choose from like 'Your Library', 'Your Mix', 'Your Recommendations'...listen to those stations and every song is indeed scrobbled to your profile.
