Musical Elitism And Why It Still Rules The Forum |
|
Hypotheses - The age of elitism has not left this forum, but rather has simply shifted shape. Whilst in the past the elitists used to love going on about how hardcore, brutal and kvlt their musical taste was, now it's about how lyrically deep, understated and obscure their musical taste is. New elitists have emerged, and some of the old ones have simply changed the colour of their spots without actually changing their attitudes.

Shut up, you listen to Guns n' Roses.
There was a period where everyone was raping the whole "music is subjective" stance and that was just boring tbh. Also, fwiw I have not seen anyone go on about how musically deep/lyrically genius x band is. -------------------

Actually you are wrong, it is about being extra extra extra open minded, and name-dropping as many top charting bands as possible to appear credible.

It's not really elitism if there's more people posting about "emotionally deep lyrics" or however you put it, it's only elitism if that group of posters tells other folk how shite their music is.

I don't think its Elitism to be exact. Most of it just being open minded and discovering different genres and artists/bands who you likely wouldn't of heard of if it wasn't for the music forum. I remember a few years ago when I first joined that if you didn't listen to underground metal you would have to gtfo, the forum has grown in a sense.
That said there are still a few members willing to put down people because of what they listen to. This message was edited by ShinobiDyne on Nov 07 2009. ------------------- Drugs is like *bleep*ing a gorilla, you don't stop until the gorillas finished - Dave Mustaine

quote Irish GamerThought I should emphasize this. I wonder, when was the last time any member in here seriously started a discussion on "how lyrically deep, understated and obscure their musical taste is"? Sure everyone jokes about how "underground" their music taste is, but I thought the satire was always visibly present in those posts. I ask myself that every time the issue of elitism comes up. Of course, a problem of elitism arises if members are shitting on you telling you that your taste in music is crap and you shouldn't bother coming around here anymore, which admittedly is done a lot by wobble, but who actually takes that seriously? He hates all of us equally. -------------------

Hypothesis: A degree of elitism is an inherent characteristic of internet forums. Forums do not create a socialist utopia where every single member and every single viewpoint gets an equal share of the forum discussion and the "forum voice". Every reasonably sized active forum has a core group of active and interactive members who tend to dominate the direction of the forum, for better or for worse. The musical genres represented in the current core group of active members are arguably a lot more "indie-rock/pop/other" orientated than they have been in the past but I would have to say that they aren't NEARLY as exclusive as they used to be.
Does the current atmosphere of the forum really warrant the kind of expose you've presented this as? Personally I don't agree with the "elitist" label for this forum as it suggests the place is repressive and narrow-minded, something I've always worked to temper. Did you even notice the fact that the last three featured artists have been a black metal band from Norway, a folk/pop band from the UK and a US punk/rock group? I will admit that there is a tendency for people to post frank opinions on bands they don't like but as long as this is kept within the bounds of expressing an opinion in a joking manner rather than attacking another's opinion in an inflammatory post I see no problem with this. Those of you who think that this boundary doesn't exist consider this a warning that if you go after someone unnecessarily based on a band they like that you think are shit I will go after you. =) UNINTENTIONAL MOD DOUBLE-HIT COMBO FTW -------------------

Your post totally put mine to shame, Dave. Stop being so smart elite. :(
I couldn't have said it any better myself, personally. Although I do find it odd how everyone seems to think that indie music is completely dominating this forum, when other genres are just as present as ever. From a quick glance at the front page: there are four indie band threads, five metal band threads, four rock/alternative, and three rap. That's a pretty good mix, is it not? Sure the Music Lounge thread may be completely overrun by members who are big into indie, but just like Dave said, they're the ones who choose to be social and interactive in the music community. Everyone is free to post whatever they want whenever they want, within reason of course. We can't control who comes to the forum to voice their opinion, everyone is given an equal opportunity. Dark Arcanine is a perfect example of what to do if you're not satisfied with the music being dicussed in here; create new discussions, plain and simple. Conor, don't fall into his trap. -------------------
