The Music Lounge [VI] |

Previous thread
This is the place for general music-related discussions that don't fit anywhere else in the forum. It is not an off-topic discussion thread but it is a place to cut loose and discuss. Perhaps a trend in music that's been on your mind or a piece of news that effects the music industry in general. It's also a great place for asking quick questions regarding music with this iteration replacing the old Helpdesk thread. Let's keep things casual, no need for any "genre wars" to spill out into this thread. If you do want a more serious genre discussion or debate, go here. If you want to discuss or provide feedback on the forum itself, please make use of the Forum RFS thread. ----------------------- I was wondering was whether you guys have summer playlists lined up or do you tend to listen to the same type of music throughout the year. I've always felt the multiple road-trips, BBQs and days at the beach demand a certain style of summer music. The stuff I listen to tends to get more mainstream/pop-orientated during the summer what with the amount of time I spend chilling out with groups of people that like completely different stuff. Weezer's Blue Album, Pinkerton and Green Album on shuffle did the job quite nicely at a BBQ we had last night: -------------------

I listen to a lot of Chilli Peppers during the summer months. Whenever it's sunny I like to put on Scar Tissue, preferably the live version from Hyde Park or Slane Castle and it brings back loads of good memories of being young and carefree, stuff like Buck Rogers or Just a Day by Feeder are other good examples of my favourite summer songs. I know what you mean about drifting more towards pop/mainstream stuff in the summer aswell. I think a lot of music takes itself a bit too seriously, and when chilling out in the sun, some bands can just seem a bit too fiddly and pretentious.
I listen to a lot of the same stuff year round too though. A lot of the post-rock music I listen to can fit most moods, be it moody winter rain, to cheerful chirpy summer days. ------------------- ![]()

Hansen would have such metal hair, if they didn't condition...
I used to think I was insane to have such seasonal music taste, but it's good to see I'm not alone. I tend to listen to a lot of "American" feeling music during the summer, stuff like Mastodon, Alarum, Disarmonia Mundi and the like just have that particular vibe. And in the Fall/Winter, I'm always listening to the Folk/black metal. I'm not sure if it's just me listening to the stuff I first "discovered" in winter/summer, or me putting the most fitting music for the Weatherly-atmosphere. ------------------- B-E-A-D-G NeoIRC | Musician's Corner | Last.fm

Always found that Band of Horses was music best enjoyed in the summertime. Nothing beats grabbing a cold one, sitting outside on a nice day, and chilling out to "The General Specific". That's the life...

i tend to listen to new music every couple days/weeks/months which makes it hard to have a list of certain things i like at certain times. tho summertime is usually happy hardcore time, right now i'm on a japanese indie jazz-pop kick.
also riddlebox is undeniably better in the summer. in a big van. -------------------

I'm mostly the same as Bandito Attack in that I change up artists I listen to every couple of weeks.
So I dunno, Islands and Peter Bjorn and John are both more fit for the summer. So are Animal Collective, especially the song Summertime Clothes. ------------------- "A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted. For some reason, I always listen to a lot of Bob Dylan in the summer. I used to play Highway 61 Revisited all the time on the way to Royals games-probably because it's a damn fine album. I also find myself listening to a lot more pop-punk stuff from the old days during the summer: blink, Sum 41, stuff like that. American Pie music.

I wouldn't say I change my listening habits at all because of the season, but there are definitely some artists, albums, and songs that really go with the season for me. One of my favorite summer albums is New Magnetic Wonder by The Apples in Stereo. I mean, just listen to the first track and tell me it doesn't scream summer.

The thread header is more than a little creepy.
As for summer music, during the day acoustic stuff is a huge must. Island in the Sun is such an awesome summer track that I'm not surprised it's been mentioned already. On top of that the likes of Santana, John Butler Trio, Newton Fawlkner and some of the Chili Peppers stuff go down pretty well on a nice sunny day. It's hard for me to think of good summer track right now though seeing as it's under 10 degrees outside and I'm drinking tea. edit - Way to take note of the video I threw up in the first post. :'[ This message was edited by The Dave(moderator) on Jun 12 2009. ------------------- ![]() † : Photography.B&L.Music

quote BANDITO ATTACKSeems to me like we need hemisphere-specific lounges to prevent embarrassingly inaccurate seasonal generalisations from being made again. :3 quote SphinxHeck yes Ewan. Especially the Japanese version of Echo Park with Just A Day. quote PyroguyLiterally just got back from a train journey that was amply summer-ified by that very album. Having said that it's a cool 16 degrees so I can't really "feel it". -------------------

Can't believe I forgot about the Beach Boys. No one else even comes close in terms of music for the summer. Except maybe Dick Dale...
These songs definitely make me wanna hit up Wasaga Beach this weekend. -------------------

I love Joy Division, I love pretty much all 60's, 70's, 80's, & 90's, I think that music has gone down the toilet since the 90's. I also love Alanis Morissette, but I love Joy Division WAAAYY more, but I still like her, she used to be a lot better though, too bad Ian Curtis (singer of Joy Division) killed himself, that's really sad....
